Hi all,

Asking on behalf of my daughter who has decided to go to Vegas with her boyfriend to celebrate her 21st.
They have booked flights, hotel (New York New York) and transfers but are now in panic mode in that they feel they are a bit short on spending money, especially after the dollar drop. Of course Mum and Dad will supply back up for them if they run short.
So what I am after is any recommendations of places to eat and drink that aren't going to break the bank. If you have any suggestions could you please if possible give examples of food or drinks with approximate pricing, so as they can get a good idea of what things will cost.
Also any tours, places of interest etc that 21/22 year olds may be interested in.
Any places areas to particularly stay away from.
Basically anything that may be of interest to them.

Thanks in advance

Go on a comedy bus tour day trip to Hoover dam, brilliant day out and amazing to see.

Not a lot know this but make a visit the vintage cars at imperial palace, even have a beautiful Kennedy Lincoln pillarless town car and Marilyn Monroe's Caddy, about 100 cars to see all in A1 condition many for sale.

A Cirque Du Soleil show is a must in Vegas.

Hard Rock Cafe always a good place for a feed & service.

Given that they are 21ish they are probably interested in shopping, you can get some good deals at the Factory outlets (North is the better one) - about $20 bucks from NYNY Casino. You can find relatively cheap places to eat inside the Casinos (some expensive ones too). There is a cheap bus that runs up and down the strip (called the Deuce) that can get them to most major locations. The strip is full of illegal Mexican's handing out cough so be warned. They mostly come out at night but that's really the only time to view the strip because of the light shows. They will no doubt be interested in clubbing and they will find plenty of these (they are just as expensive in LV as here). Recommend they go to TAO nightclub in the Venetian - but try to get in before 10pm as the queues are massive after that
Don't forget to give them extra money for tips (especially at check in as they may secure a better room - there is a thread for that on this site which can help)
Make sure they come back with lots of stories
One last thing - be careful crossing intersections and driveways around hotels. I was there 2 months ago and a colleague was nearly run over when crossing an intersection, he was looking the wrong way for cars - something which is easy to forget for Australians

Use the hotel buffets, plenty to eat and mostly good prices, you'll only need two meals a day.

I'd hire a small car, they're cheap and can get you to Rachel, on the edge of Area 51. Hotel valet parking is free everywhere I've stayed.

Visit the nuclear bomb testing museum, even at 21 it will be interesting. Some funny pics showing mushroom clouds taken from the Strip with the early hotels in full swing.

If you have a car A day trip to Lake Havasu, Hoover Dam and the mall shopping.

the Neon Sign Museum, Liberace museum and some other funny places.

I like going there every couple of years, funny and a good reality check.

And one last funny free thing to see one the way out of the airport (if you don't think slots at the baggage claim is) check out the photo of the plane refueling without landing and a speeding fuel tanker with rubber hose trailing up the plane plus the first Airport fire truck is on display, being Vegas it's a Ford Thunderbird convertable with 2 large fire ext on boot lid. A classic.

I find new stuff everytime I go, it's generally cheap but be aware of the upsell on everything.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
Some great ideas there. I have done some research on them myself and printed stuff off for them so hopefully they take advantage of it.

Once again, thanks all.

The " Freemont Street Experience" is well worth a look. It's located in the old part of Vegas where the Golden Nugget and other old time casinos are.

A taxi from NY, NY will be something like $20-$30. The actual experience ( a light show) is free and well worth a look. You can also easily spend a few hours just walking around Freemont St just looking at everything. The light show is on a couple of times a night, just google for times.

It can also be fun just going around and looking at all the themed hotels, NY,NY is just one example. Hope this helps! Happy travels!

As mentioned, buffets are a cheap way to feed yourself ~$20pp.

Watching the watershow at the Bellagio is worthwhile.

I liked exploring the casinos, and the themes they used.

Cheap tix to a show can be bought from a number of places (on the day of the performance)

Helicopter out to the Grand Canyon from Vegas airport. We used Sundance Helicopters.

haven't been to LASV yet but found QF $A & AA airline pages both have the activity page where u can book tours and extras whenever- some need a printed voucher others just a ref #

Have a night cap at the Mandarin Oriental bar........superlative view of the strip.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

See some shows, Jubilee is the classic Las Vegas dance show. There is always lots of shows on and you'll find something you'll like.

Or save a few more dollars and just use the Deuce and Downtown express. A 24hr pass is $8.

Not to be a party pooper, but the outlet malls in vegas are very poor value compared to 2008-09. You can find bargains at the large clothes store Burlington Brands (outlet mall south) where you will get clothes with the designer label ripped off. My friend bought some authentic skins. On my road trip, Vacaville, CA was the stand out. (Vanhusen dress pants wool or wool blend, 3 for $70)

I did find that Yama Sushi's all you can eat is incredibly good value and fantastic sushi & sashimi. Be prepared to wait (or start eating at 6pm).

But seeing you posted this on the 26th, they probably have already left.

On a clear night they must go tot he top of the stratosphere. Amazing views over Vegas. You really only do need 2 meals a day. Stayed went with teenagers, and being our first time (last year) to Vegas, we stayed at circus circus which was a bit out of the way, but we had a car and driven from LAX. We ate at the buffet in circus circus quite a number of times, no crowds, food great and not expensive. Because we had a car, we drove to the major casinos on the strip and parked in their free parking lots and walked from there. A show is a must. If they are not set on a particular show, it is worthwhile checking out the hotel front desk for reduced price tickets when they get to Vegas. Much cheaper than buying in advance from Australia. They will have a great time.

What happens in Vegas...

... Will show up on your credit card statement three to seven days later.

Written while standing in a queue in vegas for an expensive burger because it has Gordon Ramsay's name on it.
