Hi all,

I am thinking about a SYD to AKL rtn flight with LAN in business for $770 that leaves SYD at 9:30am. I can get this price booking through LAN or pay double through Qantas and get a QF flight code. Qantas website allows me to be book this flight with the preceding connection from ARM arriving in SYD at 7.45am. I have no problems with this tight connection if all issued on the one ticket. I don't trust the ARM to SYD flight (more specifically the slow bus trip from plane to terminal) but can cope with being bumped onto the following flight. However, what would be my situation if I bought the ARM to SYD and SYD to AKL (as LAN ticketed) legs separately and missed the connection? Would QF just say I tried the impossible? I can't even see how I could check-in on time if I had two tickets.

Is there anyway of getting the cheap LAN pricing and ARM to SYD on the one ticket?

Cheers

ARM/SYD/AKL return, all QF coded $1800
ARM/SYD QF coded, SYD/AKL LAN coded $1100

Will you have checked baggage ? Aust passport ?
QF will not care (say its impossible) as its not their SYD-AKL flight. All QF has to do is get you from ARM to SYD some time. LAN may care or may not care if you no show. A no show would be nothing to with QF. You may not be able to check in for the LAN flight at SYD international. With QF as 1 PNR you will probably get both boading passes at ARM.

Up to you if the risk is worth $700. I would not take the risk dom to International. Internationial to domestic I would take the risk.

Beware the LAN flight can have terrible on time performance. Before you leave ARM look at the AKL airport web site to check if the LAN SCL-AKL flight is on time. It its very later they just cancel AKL-SYD-AKL

Thanks, clearly rules out the separate PNR idea. And I would have a checked bag with Aust passport.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

No. Its all about risk vs reward

No show cancel all other flights on that ticket. But business tickets can have more flexibilty

Oneworld to oneworld on a separate ticket should be able to check in at the first airport, that is the QF policy.

If the flights are linked and you're checked in SYD-AKL in ARM then that gives you a little more protection.

You could try your luck with a *good* flight centre (99.9% are terrible and won't be able to help - despite insisting they can) agent who will mix the flights and do a price beat to get you the LAN pricing.

I've taken the risk on a few occasions and it's worked out. I've looked at it this way:-

Linked bookings - tick
Oneworld Emerald - tick
In highest cabin available - tick
Check in at originating port with ALL boarding passes - tick
Checked bags that further commit you to the flight - tick
Loads of availability on QF later in the day in my fare class (generally 'I' on those cheap biz fares but yours isn't so cheap so might be 'D')

As others say it's all about risk.

Thanks all,

If I can get it the booking linked I'll have no qualms.

Have you tried a travel agent to get it on one ticket?

Linking is information only and not the same a 1 ticket/PNR, which will give you protection. If you have to pick up your luggage at Sydney domestic and take it to international, by landside train/bus to check in again you may/will not make it. Even if hand luggage only I am unsure if you can use the QF airside bus. Others here will know.

Worth going out to the ARM airport and asking the QF check in people what they can do with separate OW tickets. In person will be better than a phone call

LAN is on time today ArrivalsAndDepartures - Auckland Airport

Don't risk it, was in the same situation 6 months ago different carriers but all one world like in your case and paid the extra. Q will not care and rightly so with separate tickets
