Hi guys

Has anyone noticed that SIA flight timings can be a little frustrating from Sydney?

E.g. Syd to BKK or Syd to LHR, there is usually a minimum 6-8 hour for the connecting flight from Singapore

Was very keen to join and create a KrisFlyer Westpac credit card and start accumulating points as they have low point flight awards. However am starting to think twice now haah

No ..... you are wrong

SYD-LHR SQ222/SQ322 - connection is 1 hr 55.... coming back there is 2 possibilities with 2 hour connections....

going to BKK syd-bkk, on SQ232 and SQ978, connection is 1 hour 10 mins. Or SQ220/976 its 2 hr 45 min. On the return its 2 hr 25 min connection....

What more could you want?

Unless you are talking about availability of awards, I cannot see how there are minimum of 6-8 hour connection time in SIN.

In fact, because of award restriction, I had to have 7 hour layover at SIN for my CAN-SIN-SYD J Saver award earlier next year.

When searching for redemption flights they do offer alternative pairs of flights. Often they have a variety of connection times through SIN allowing for quick connection or longer connect and heading into SIN centre.

I have a flight next year LAX/SIN/BNE which requires an 8 hour transit which will be enough time to grab some exercise.

Wow thanks for pointing those out, found them!

On the return flight there is a 2 hour transit as well

PS: do you guys find that there are more KrisFlyer award flights than QFF classic award flights?

In my experience, Krisflyer has more redemptions for where I have been wanting to go. NZ, SIN, USA.

Be aware that KF offers virtually no (very few) intra-Australian redemptions.

On this note the only flight that I can think of that would fit the bill would be UA SYD-MEL. Obviously not bookable in its own right, but have often wondered if it could be booked as part of a star award, RTW or circle fare, eg ICN-SYD (OZ)SYD-MEL(UA).

TG has a late night SYD-BNE but not sure if that can be booked separately.

Practicality of KF miles for intra-oz travel .... 0%

Agreed 100%.

That's where Amex MR and Westpac Altitude come in handy, KF for international (without points expiring after 3 years as they do for CC directly earning into KF) OR DJ or pay with points for domestic travel. No locking into a single program.

Interesting point. Just today I rechecked the sums on paying an ATO IAS which was due. Figures went like this:

Pay a $10,000 ATO bill with AMEX surcharge $125

KF Amex Card for 15,000 Krisflyer points
Altitude Amex Card for 20,000 altitude points which converts to 10,000 KF points or Velocity points
Qantas Amex card for 12,500 QFF points.

I opted for direct earn to KF program as I will be making a redemption in the next few months. Situation would be different for others.

Whoa. Sorry for being off topic but you can pay the ATO with Amex and earn points. I thought you could only Bpay.

I'm actually finding it relatively easy scoring (economy) redemptions on SQ so for me 3 years is not a problem either. Latest is for SIN-MEL late Jan - flights are showing 0's in all classes on day of travel, yet my waitlist came through tonight (I think PPS status helps). :) But I do have a many more QF points I want to use, but they are almost as full, and almost got laughed at when I asked to request! Plan C was a cheap fare down to DPS and redeem on DJ from there which was available.... and this highlights the advantage of not locking all your points into QF.

I have only recently started using KrisFlyer and find the availability in economy reasonable.

I had no troubles in May 2009 booking a SYD-SIN-BKK return departing on Boxing Day. I have also been monitoring availability for BNE-SIN-TPE-SIN-SYD in June 2010 and it looks to be quite good. Hopefully I will be able to book in January.

I also find more availability of awards in SQ KF in general, compared this with QF that I used to use previously, especially in peak periods.
