I don't think this has been discussed recently but I just received a note to say that Airportr (Check-in your bags from home. Airline and government approved. Let us take the burden of your baggage. - AirPortr) is now available with Qantas.

I use it in the UK with easy jet and find it fantastic - when at a home, or at a hotel they come and pick up your bags, then you head out to the airport whenever without luggage - works very very well with kids, lots of bags and especially with ski's!

With easyjet we even send the bags the day before then just hang out with hand luggage until the flight the next day... Its not cheap - especially if you don't need a van to move the families stuff. very pleased this is now available with Qantas... They also have another service where you drop all your bags off to them at the airport and they drop them at your hotel or home - never tried that however...

Works with BA, Finnair and others... Wish this was available in Melbourne.

I guess if you have an evening flight, you can use this service to deliver your bag to the airport first.
So after hotel check out at 11am or so, you can still explore the city without worrying about your bags.

Without giving this much thought, what is the benefit of this service?

It's particularly useful when you have a lot of luggage but will use public transport for your airport transfer. Airport luggage collection/delivery services have existed in Japan since the 80s - it's much easier to use a courier to deliver your bags than try to drag them onto trains/subways/bullet trains without any luggage storage areas.

Thats exactly how I have used it - especially when carrying oversize/ski bags - with large amounts of family in tow.

My last departure from LHR saw us getting the local red bus to Hounslow West station and the Tube to T5. Luckily we had just one suitcase each but anything more and public transport in London is a nightmare.

Would be very useful in Paris. The metro is even worse than the tube. Almost no minor stations have escalators, let alone lifts!

Grrrr, don’t remind me of this!
Dragging 2x30kg suitcases up multiple flights of stairs whilst breathing in that sweet scent of Parisian urine is something I won’t forget in a hurry

Oh agree! Before we started the Camino de Santiago we travelled the Eurostar from London to Paris and then TGV to Bayonne. Transferring in Paris from Gare du Nord to the Metro to Montparnasse Metro to Montparnasse TGV was almost as tiring as the Camino itself !

The Heathrow Express is much better for this purpose. You'd have to stay close to Paddington for it to work.
I've done it with an oversized/ski bag with no problem. Large lifts at LHR make it a breeze.
