Hi folks,

I saw this last week, and I was wondering if it was a common occurrence, or what reasons could there be for it?

I was on a DJ flight heading for runway 34R at SYD. As we approached the runway for take off, there was a QF 738 sitting there on the taxiway presumably to be next to take off, and our plane took an earlier taxiway onto the runway and took off from there while the QF plane was still sitting on the taxiway.

Jumping the queue may not be the case, priority is given to aircraft with push back timing all things being equal, or the other aircraft may have not yet had airspace available for departure unlike yours.

Could be the Qantas aircraft had not called 'Ready'. Or could be negating a wake turbulence issue with an intersection departure. Or could be as Markis10 said and you were departing in a different direction airborne to the preceding aircraft so you could go while the Qantas aircraft waited.

There are unusual situations that develop but those above would be the most likely

Thanks folks. My curiousity has been satisfied. :)

I was imagining a load of people in the QF flight wondering "How come they are getting away before us?!?"

Maybe they were late and had missed their slot to takeoff, or conversely maybe they were early :)

I suspect the failure to call ready was probably the reason, the proximity of 34R to the Qantas gates can make for a hurried safety briefing and pilots cannot call ready until its done.

I believe 16R is what you had in mind. 34R is nowhere near any QF gates (or the terminals for that matter).

To address this potential issue (which can also occur if 27 is in use for MEL), I notice QF sometime starts the safety demo while the a/c is still being pushed back.

Yep, I was thinking 16R. Bit embarrassing for an ex Sydney tower controller!

A friend of mine who was a Metro Capt for TL was doing a charter DRW/DIL and the TL Brasilia doing the RPT DIL flight had got pushback clearance ahead of his flight & proceeded to cross RW29 before turning left & continuing the tax for a 29 departure further down the runway.

The Metro taxiing towards RW29 then calls up DRW Tower requesting a backtrack on the runway which was approved along with clearance for takeoff. The end result was a Brasilia Capt who by all accounts wasn't a happy camper.

If the crew can't get a safety briefing done for a 34R departure there's a problem.
