(AVV) Avalon Airport: the gateway to the surf coast.

I remember the time they gave the AVV-ADL flights the flick, a few years back. Which was a pity, because since we live just down the road (quite literally) in little old Lara, just out of Geelong, it was always so convenient for us to jump in the car and be at the airport within a few minutes. We can be sitting at the gate within 20 minutes after stepping at the door at home!

And now, just this afternoon, I receive an email from JQ about how they will no longer operate flight to BNE from AVV anymore either. They rescheduled me onto a late flight arriving pretty much on the same day, but at 0:25am!

Again, such a pity. And, apparently the car parking is cheaper there. And, it means my poor dear father doesn't have to do such a big expedition all the way to Tullamarine at the crack of dawn or in the wee hours of the morning just to pick me up or drop me off. (Yes, he's very convenient too  ). Reminds me of a quote which is one member's signature over at FT: 'If God had meant men to fly, he would have made getting to the airport easier.'

It seems because their flights weren't terribly full that they are doing this. But so often the flights I've been on, both into and out of AVV, have been pretty busy. But then, I haven't been on every flight at that. Yet, sources say that the SYD flights out of AVV still remain popular.

In any case, I won't be surprised if they drop the SYD flights too one day.

The email as I received below:

Hi 'Catweazle'!

We wanted to let you know that from May 2 we will no longer be flying from Melbourne Avalon to Brisbane. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and have a few options to help you change your travel plans:

  1. Accept the new booking to, or from Melbourne Tullamarine that we have arranged for you. The details are below. Follow the 'View and accept' button to confirm that you will travel on this flight or choose one of the alternatives.
  2. Change your flight between Melbourne Avalon and Brisbane to depart on or before May 1, 2014. Contact us on 1800 735 852 for this option.
  3. If the change means you now have a booking that contains both Melbourne Avalon and Melbourne Tullamarine flights and would like to fly in and out of the same airport, contact us on 1800 735 852 to rearrange both flights.

If you are currently outside Australia, contact us on one of our international numbers.

Once again we're sorry for the inconvenience and look forward to seeing you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Jetstar Customer Service.

Avalon has just been a total failure really, I flew on Tiger once from Alice Springs to Avalon during their short lived attempt at moving most flights there.

It's a shame because it is quite convenient to the population of Geelong. It's a big city really, 200,000 people. You would think they would have given it a bit more support.

I have done AVV once and the terminal is a shed.

I did have a return trip but due to a few things I changed and went via Tulla.

I refused to fly in or out of there after the first and last time.

You wonder if they should just call a spade a spade and call it Geelong Airport or even (soon to be Geelong International Airport?). Whilst Melbourne (Avalon) may draw in some, once they people realise that it is not really in Melbourne then they get a bit annoyed.

And the parking fees, whilst they started cheap, are now not too cheap at all - 24hrs $39, 3 days $69.

Have to agree - should have been marketed as GEELONG airport. And quitre right about the parking, it was a bargain when they first opened, not now!

I know it's only a shed airport but it's very easy to use, from car to plane takes just a few minutes and a very short walk!

I was considering flying the route as I've not been to Avalon, but I'm yet to do so.

I have been twice, both times on a 744, once as a passenger for the air show and another on the flight deck doing about fifteen circuits and bumps.

Perfectly matched to the LCC image of the airline that flies there :p

Not looking very optimistic for the airport's expansion plans:

$11m Govt deal keeps Jetstar at Avalon as airport eyes international flights - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

Light rail for 5 flights a day? By the time they start construction (if at all) there won't be any flights left! How about MEL first before throwing cash away!

The simple truth for me is that as a resident of the eastern suburbs, AVV is just further away then MEL, and not worth the effort.
