[FONT=&quot]Jetstar ceo Bruce Buchanan today announced the introduction by the end of this year of "world first" technology which will see boarding passes available on mobile phones using standard SMS messages.

Other airlines have introduced mobile phone boarding passes via internet-enabled handsets, but with the Jetstar system any mobile phone will be able to accept the JQ boarding pass via the common text message.

The carrier also plans to introduce 24 hour automatic check-in to complement the move, which allows customers who buy fares at Jetstar.com to request at the time of booking for the airline to automatically check them in 24 hours prior to their flight departure, with the boarding pass to then be sent via email or SMS text message.

The new system will be trialled at Melbourne Avalon Airport, with an Australia-wide domestic rollout by the end of the year and plans for introduction in other markets including its NZ domestic services.

Buchanan said it would improve service levels by freeing staff to get on with the job of processing checked-in baggage.

"Well over half of our existing domestic customers now utilise electronic check-in options in terms of Web-Check or Self Service Kiosks at airports, and with Australians' well known love for new technology we believe this new service will be highly attractive to people whether they are frequent or irregular flyers," he said.
