Japan Airlines mulls cutting 5,000 jobs

Struggling Japan Airlines Corp., which is in the midst of major restructuring, is considering slashing 5,000 jobs in three years, a news report said.

The planned job cuts would be equal to about 10 per cent of the company's work force, Kyodo News agency said, citing unnamed industry sources.
Company officials could not be reached for comment late on Monday.

The number of workers at Japan Airlines, Asia's biggest airline group, stood at 48,930 at the end of April, according to the airline's website.

The loss-making airline, known as JAL, hopes to cut the jobs through early retirement by March 2012, Kyodo said. The airline aims to unveil a massive restructuring program by the end of September.

Hit by plummeting demand in a slumping global economy and swine flu fears, JAL incurred its biggest-ever quarterly net loss of 99 billion yen ($A1.19 billion) in the three months to June.
The airline has forecast a net loss of 63 billion yen ($A795.0 million) for the current fiscal year to March 2010. As part of restructuring, JAL plans to cut the number of flights and slash costs by 53 billion yen ($A668.81 million) during the current fiscal year and another 100 billion yen ($A1.26 billion) in the next fiscal year.

Well they could certainly start by cutting some of their domestic flights - where I lived in northern Japan there were 8-10 flights a day to Tokyo. Price was about 15 000yen each way.

Distance was about 400km. Time was about 50 minutes.

However, from the city to the airport was 20 minutes. From Haneda or Narita airport to Tokyo is about 30 or 70 minutes and at least another 1000yen fare.

Compare to the bullet train with better legroom, departures every 15 minutes and a duration between 90 minutes and 2 hours (depending on if you got a stop all stations or express - why would you fly? And a cost of only 10 800yen each way.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

But how full are those flights?

The bullet train can get you almost anywhere around Japan now at reasonable prices and times. But JL still don't operate high-capacity 744s domestically for no reason, do they?

been thinking lately how Japan does not have the economy airline sector we have. JAL and ANA remind me of the QF & Ansett days. I do like JAL, even their old fleet is well maintained.
