Hi guys

I’m flying to Manchester from Melbourne on Japan Airlines, codeshare with Finnair via Helsinki. If I check in at Melbourne through JAL check in, will they provide my boarding passes all the way through to Manchester? Has anyone had experience of this with JAL?

Thanks guys!

They did indeed, in fact, I’m just at Manchester waiting to see if my bags have made it all the way from Manchester.

On a side note, I wasn’t overly impressed with JAL. Finnair who they were codesharing with were excellent!

For some bizarre reason I read this as JAL to Icelandair (no idea why). For JAL->Finnair that should have been through checked, as you experienced. Let us know your thoughts on JAL when you have time :)

Please report back on why you weren't impressed with JAL. They have an excellent reputation so I am interested to know about your experience.

So, I think that the issue was that the service was not great and the food wasn’t that nice.

There was no welcome drink on board, even though we had plenty of time while boarding.

Food was served pretty quickly and was fine, just a quick snack before sleep.

The bed was really comfy, although I wasn’t offered the little cardigan to wear. I asked for some help with a mattress pad while I changed into my pyjamas. When I came back from the toilets, the attendant had just left the pad on the seat and I had to set it up myself.

Then, when I woke up and it was breakfast time, I chose the western breakfast and it was poor. The croissant was really dry. I asked if they had any jam instead of the provided honey and received a very curt ‘no’. I pressed to see if she would check in premium/economy, but she said, I’ve already checked, we don’t have any. The hot meal was a frittata thing, not very nice at all. They had a nice berry smoothie and when I asked if they had anymore I got the curt ‘no’, again.

So, yeah, the service seemed a bit cold and like they were doing the bare minimum rather than making an effort.

I then flew on Finnair from Tokyo to Helsinki so had an immediate comparison and the service here was so much better. More personal and friendly and willing to accomodate my requests which weren’t necessarily within reason (such as an extra sneaky amenity pack). So I thought this was just really nice.
