Not big on words.
Here are a few happy snaps from a recent SYD > NRT flight in J on a B777.
This was my first JAL flight to NRT. Need to use them as their schedule lined up with my requirements.

Check-in ... flawless. Was welcomed at SYD airport at check-in. So much so I was a little dazed. But it may have also been the (big) night before and an early flight our of SYD.

Onboard service was excellent.
Positives: Service, food, shell seat (when reclined), bathrooms (kept clean), amenities (nice chocolate brown colour), held Y pax back until J pax had exited, B777 seemed 'fresh', (wrapped) toothbrushes placed in bathrooms half way through flight, price (was much cheaper than QF for what I feel is a better hard product)

Negatives: Shell seat (when in seat position) - insufficient under thigh support (length), the amenities were offered in a big wooden basket where you select from items except they all look the same and at first glance it appears they are offering you some dark brow plastic bags with no information (so I grabbed a few and decided I'd work out later what they are), headsets (where QF Dom Y type) cough and hard to hear the movie during the dialogue, QF SCs still yet to post even after a week later (yet QFF# appears on JAL BP)

Overall I would fly them again in a heart beat.

Note to QF, get some of your people flying (incognito) on a JAL flight.

And here come the snaps.

More pics - this time of my traditional food selection sometimes I remembered to take a pic only after I was eating (hung over from night before).
They had various versions - from traditional Japanese to Western and Western variants. A great choice.

First pic is the main meal (lunch), second is dessert, 3rd is pre-landing snack

Thanks!!

I was just about to book this flight and this gave me re-assurance that they at least use a somewhat new seating on this route... after being burned on NRT-YVR with a Business Class dated back to 1980.

Seats are not 100% flat but angled like QF B747 has.
But for a 9 hr day flight, very comfortable. Do not sit in the last row of business if you can avoid it as that seemed noisy due to Y starting.

Just make sure it is a B777 and should be fine.

And take your own NC headphones. I was surprised at the rubbish they gave us. That really was the only let down.
The slippers were also very comfortable.

Thanks for the TR was thinking of flying them to CDG. The food looks a bit uninspired (but can be the picture)

The food was very good IMHO. I took the pic half way through the meal and had eaten most of it. So I probably should not have posted that pic as it doesn't do them justice. I chose the traditional menu (had already consumed the Miso - this is the cup bottom right-ish). It was tastey and fesh. Exaclty what i wanted after a night on the booze.

There were more Western meals with the usual stuff.

The dessert was lovely. And you could have had other things along the way.
At the mid point I also had a cheese plate and more champage (I just can't help it when I fly).

There were also pre-flight drinks and little cracker type snax.

Note to any service industry provider (planes, trains, hotels, restaurants, stores...): Get to Japan to see how it can be done.

Ooops forgot 1 item worth of a pic.
The PJs. It was only a top, but fairly long. Very comfortable and thick. Black. a like a cardigan style with big buttons.
You could easily wear this through the airport if you had an accident with normal shirt / top.
I can almost see myself using this in winter at home as a PJ top.

Having been to Japan a few times I totally agree.

However, good service needs good customers. How often have you seen someone deliver excellent service and the recipient ignores or insults the server? Even the basic thank you is often missing.

When service is good, one is almost 'forced' to offer a big "thank you" in return. There just seems no way to not be. But I do agree how some people seem to just take it for granted.
