Hi,

I was wondering if someone could confirm the JAL Domestic J class status point earn ?
The Qantas calculator (https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/do/dyns/initialPointsEarned) for domestic Japan routes with JAL offers Econ, Flex Econ, Prem Econ and First as options.
Is J Class = Premium Economy ?

cheers

Possibly - as per the table on this page: https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/f...rn-categories-for-flights-on-partner-airlines

As cmon0005 points out below, the underlying fare class (before the upgrade is applied) may mean earning economy rather than premium economy.

If you are flying on a route offering domestic F, the surcharge is about AUD80 over economy. Earning depends on the underlying base fare - either flex economy or First.

I believe it will actually post as Economy, had family members who booked JAL KIX-HND with a Class J surcharge, it posted to QFF as Economy.

Mel_Traveller, thanks for the feedback. Should have thought to look at the Earning tables myself.

cmon0005, in the case of your family members, are you saying that the J Class posted status points as per the Economy _earn_ rates ?
If so did anyone challenge this based on the Earning tables ?

Sorry for the nitpicking but my current projections have me right on the cusp for status retention so the actual earn rate will determine whether I need to do another flight.

cheers

As far as I am aware the posting as economy was correct, it is just confusing on the QFF tables as J surcharge appears twice, depends if the original fare was discount economy or not which I have found is impossible to work out.

J (Discount Economy plus Premium Surcharge) = Economy earn rate.
J (Economy plus Premium Surcharge) = Premium Economy rate.

Seems I didn't read the table properly to pick up the different earnings. I've amended my post above accordingly.

Hopefully once JAL upgrade their archaic domestic reservation system to Amadeus, I suspect they will adopt normal fare class buckets like almost every other airline in the world and will make it easier for all concerned.

Jul 31, 2014 JAL and Amadeus sign for Altea as part of the airline’s Passenger Service System transformation programme

The price of JAL tickets would probably make a status run not economically viable. And based on my research JAL domestic J is really just a nicer seat: no other service difference.

I thought I read about cheap advance purchase F fares that were lucrative? Maybe I misunderstood, or Fairer and Simpler killed them.... ?
