Hi folks,

Just wondering what was going on here.

Was on a flight on Sunday, and I saw two people sitting in 4A/4C, and they were receiving the business class service, drinks pre take off, and the meal service during the flight.

I thought this very unusual as there was only 1 J class seat occupied on the flight in question.

Anyone know what this would be about?

Just a guess but they were friends of the FA maybe? If it bothers you, you could always bring it to the attention of the powers that be via an email. I agree that if they were J class guests then they should have been seated in J class. And if they weren't....well best to leave that up to the company.

Might have been something else: Maybe special service for a wedding anniversary, honeymoon or something like that?

Also, (and i'm throwing this one out there) maybe they booked J, got on the plane and realised row 4 had LTA and decided to switch for the IFE?

You, sir, think outside the square!

Except row 4 on the refurbs doesn't have LTA because row 3 are the new seats with the fixed armrests. No IFE in seatback. But hey! If my birthday, wedding or anniversary gets me a J dinner on a Y ticket I'm in! It might just be one of those occassions for me everytime I fly.

The plane in question was a refurb, so the assumptions in the previous post are indeed correct. :)

If the people in question were friends of the FA or staff travelling, one would have thought that they would have been seated in the J cabin, so that the other people in the front of the Y cabin wouldn't be wondering what was going on. Had they been in the J cabin, then everyone else would just have assumed that they were J class travellers.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Remember that on VA Seats 3 abcdef and 4 abcedef are not J class... so those earlier who said it was a seat with those armrests are wrong - 4A and C def are standard economy seats!

This is why the rest of us who only have anniversaries or birthdays once a year can't have nice things!!! :p

This would be most irritating to other Y guests wondering why these people were getting something extra.

I flew within the first week of the intro of flexi fares and was most embarrassed when I was handed a meal because of the confused stares I got from the people around me - I even heard one person whisper 'why the hell is that guy getting a free meal?!?'

To be honest i've never understood the attitude that someone else getting something nice somehow devalues things for everyone else. If an airline (or any other company) goes above the call of duty for some customers on some occasions it is IMHO a good thing providing it doesn't cause a particular detriment to anyone else.

To turn this around how often have you read a trip report, or comment here, or heard an acknowledgement that someone went above and beyond the call of duty and thought it was a good thing? As to the reason, none of us know but there are lots of special occasions for good (honeymoon, engagement, birthday... just released from prison) or bad (bereavement, rushing to see a dying relative, on way to a funeral, just been delayed for 17 hours on another flight) where you would like to think that if the airline knew they'd do something a little special if it didn't cost them too much to do so and providing a J meal in Y seats fits that bill pretty well IMHO.

I have no idea what prompted it but i have no problem whatsoever with them doing that and would simply like to think what goes around comes around.

I've never understood why people get upset when they see others getting something that they didn't. As long as you're getting what you've paid for the rest should be of no consequence?

Any of the new config'd ones, rows 3+4 dont have any IFE. just the stupid portable players. They may be old reconfig'd ones? I'm not an expert on the plane configs ;-)

I think it depends but Row 5 is probably more likely to have LTA from my experience. Was really just thinking aloud.

I'll just go back to what I was doing prior to this..
