Is luggage collection required on a stop over if made via 2 separate bookings?

If I book the following on two different tickets, will my luggage make it through to NZ?

1) NRT to BNE on QF62.
Arrive in Brisbane at 0645.

2a) BNE to AKL on QF8770 (EK434 A380)
Depart Brisbane at 0810.

If not and I have to collect my luggage, check into new flight and make it back through customs in Brisbane, can this be done in under 90 minutes?

I asked at the counter today during another trip, and was told it is always decided at the departing airport on the day, but Qantas would never check bags through on emirates, even if booked on the same reference... if this is true, what if i changed the second flight to:

2b) BNE to AKL on QF123
Depart Brisbane at 0935.

This isn't my preferred option, seems like a waste of an hour and a half, and won't be as nice as the EK A380.

Who did you speak to at which counter in Brisbane?
Were they aware you would be booked on a QF flight number on an EK aircraft?
If the flights were on the same PNR/ticket, they would certainly check them through.
Even on a separate PNR if you are booked on the QF flight number they should be able to do so routinely.
I am not sure of the extent to which QF and EK interline but I would be surprised if they wouldn't do it even if you were booked on the EK flight number.
I have had luggage interlined between EY and MH and between PG and CX on separate PNRs when connecting via BKK, for example.
HOWEVER I have been told this isn't possible on separate PNRs through LHR - even if the airlines have an interline agreement.
I believe that is because of Her Majesty's Customs Service.
So it is possible that Australian Customs - sorry, Border Farce - might put a spanner in the works.
It is certainly worth further inquiry though.
Otherwise, at BNE I think 90 minutes should be possible but it doesn't leave a lot of time for delays or unforeseen events.
ExpertFlyer says QF62 is on-time 75% of the time with an average delay of 16 minutes.
So you will probably have only 74 minutes.

Hi BenAlexander,

According to this FAQ on the Qantas Website, you'll be fine as long as you're on the one ticket.

Baggage with connecting flights

Question

If I am travelling on more than one flight to an international destination will my bags be checked through onto my next flight?

Answer

Yes, if both your flights are booked on the same single reservation and your flights are all with Qantas or Qantas, Emirates and/or and another oneworld[SUP]®[/SUP] airline your baggage will be transferred between flights for you.

Although it doesn't say so, it implies you'd be OK if on separate PNRs within QF/EK as it only calls out the QF-> non OW/EK as being the problem.

Personally, I suspect that QF could book them through, but I would not want to run that risk without prior clarification - maybe call QF and see if they can conform this.

Otherwise, 1hr 25 minutes is not IMHO enough time to do both inbound and outbound immigration etc. I would barely attempt that for a domestic connection!!

There is a priority lane for premium PAX departing BNE.
Does anyone know if there is there currently a premium priority lane on arrival in BNE international or not?
And if so would you have access to them either because of class of travel or frequent flyer status?
Without that the time is probably too close for comfort if you can't check your bags through.

The MCT is 50 mins for QF->EK at BNE so it's a legal connection but you are 100% reliant on QF at NRT being willing to through check to EK.

Thanks for the information.
A few conflicting reports here, so clearly not as straight forward as I was hoping.

I will be in Business class from NRT, and will be economy (maybe premium economy) from BNE.
I am currently Silver, but may hit Gold before these flights. I will be travelling with my wife and infant.

It seems weird that it is up to the mood of the QF staff in NRT on the day. Is there no policy for this sort of thing (it can't be that rare).

What happens if the NRT flight is delayed? If QF causes me to miss my connection, will they bump me to the next available flight free of charge, or will I need to rebook myself?

Is that true? They expect someone to manage de-planning, doing immigration, getting one's luggage, doing customs, finding checkin, checking in, doing emigration, and still getting to boarding gate for international widebody flight, all in 50 minutes??

No of course not. The MCT is for PAX connecting on the same PNR with boarding passes and luggage through to their destination.
It's marginally relevant to the OP's situation.

It's actually highly relevant. The DCS won't let you through-check a bag (from NRT) if the two flights fail the MCT.
