Is it worth positioning to Sydney or Melbourne from Brisbane for a better flight?

Hi all,

Myself and the better half have done two previous J class return redemptions with SIA. Bris-Lond and Bris-Ams. Both were very enjoyable. Presently we have enough points warehoused to do a couple more. :) Happy Days!

To make the next trip even better, would you all consider it worthwhile to position to Sydney or Melbourne to get the better flight to Singapore. e.g. A380 or 777-300ER as opposed to flying out of Brisbane on an A330-300? (Much as I would love to fly/try F, it takes a number of years to save up the points for J let alone F).

If yes to the above, can we do it on the one ticket and still get the online 15% discount? I'd be happy to book a Domestic Y ticket Bris-Syd, but then we'd lose out on the luggage allowance.

Thoughts?

Hubby and me are flying LHR-SYD in April so that we can fly F in the A380. We then fly y back to Brizzy on VA. Baggage allowance isn't an issue for us, as hubby is platinum with VA so we get an extra bag anyway.

I'd do the same if we were J, as the as the a380 and 777er have lie flat seats rather than recliner seats..

I am prepared to reposition to SYD or MEL to fly F or if J rewards are not available from BNE.

Unless I have another reason to stop over in SYD or MEL, though, I will take the direct BNE-SIN over BNE-SYD/MEL-SIN if all in J and savers are available ex BNE even if the hard product is inferior. Particularly if you line up a connection to Europe on the 380, I just don't think it's worth the extra sector.

I'll defer to someone more knowledgeable about trying to add a domestic connection on the same ticket as I've never tried it before.

We did exactly this in 2014 for a Greek holiday. MEL had more availability on the A380 to SIN. We actually did the journey as a one way *A redemption as we tacked on ZRH-ATH in J.

Did a QF J redemption from BNE-MEL. MEL is an easier airport to transfer from DOM - INTL.

We gave ourselves a clear three hours on the ground at MEL just in case of unexpected delays. Pretty soon we found ourselves in the SQ F lounge. Nothing spectacular. Obviously once we were on board it was so worth making the extra leg of the journey.

On the return journey we just came suites from ZRH-SIN, then J SIN-BNE as we had opted just to get home earlier. This was not the most effective use of the miles but it fitted with our timeframe. We were entitled to TPR access after arriving in suites, had a rest, headed to town then TPR before boarding the evening flight back to BNE.

I would definitely make the journey to SYD or MEL to get more suites time - it's addictive.

I did the BNE-SIN red-eye a few weeks ago. The A380 might be slightly better product but may mot be worth repositioning to SYD or MEL unless you want to do an extra flight.

I thought daylight savings wasn't starting until next weekend, that sees the return of the 5am "redeye" from BNE to SYD. :p;)

(I know what you mean though)

Thanks all for your thoughts....gives us something to think about for future trips.....hmmm tough decision to have to make.

Unless you are going to fly F, don't go out of your way to re-position would be my suggestion.

We are re-positioning to SYD in Jan the night before ( staying at Rydges) so we can get the A380 flight. Time is not an issue...we want the experience

I have done similar in order to fly PE to HKG - I was just successful claiming under the Rydges best rate guarantee - well worth a few minutes checking around if you booked with them directly

I definitely wouldnt bother positioning (especially overnight) just to fly PE over Y

Thanks Alanslegal, I'm starting to lean this way now. Probably well worth it if we were going F (since there's no F out of Brisbane that i'm aware of).

J out of Brisbane on the A330 is still excellent, especially considering we would probably take a day flight to Singapore and its the shorter of the two legs to Europe.

I've just booked F SYD-SIN-AMS as a Brisbane resident (September next year and there was no saver J BNE-SIN-AMS on the date I needed. I did wait list the direct J ticket, so will wait and see if that clears (would create an interesting dilemma).
