I'm off to HK later this year and wish to take my laptop. Hotel provides internet access, but is pricey.

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 and whilst it has a sim card slot, I can't actually insert a sim card into it.

My sister has a spare 3 USB dongle. Can I purchase some sort of sim card in HK to put into the dongle so I can access the internet?

If not, what other connections suggestions do you have?

Main use for laptop will be to Skype home, uploading photos to Facebook and general use.

I got a 3 Hong Kong SIM when I was up there last year. Works a treat. I can't recall exactly how much it was, but I seem to remember it being around $15AUD.

It's a little tricky to get as most of the staff at the 3 Store were not so good on the English side of things, but I did get one. Worked great (still have it for next trip too).

I always get a 3 card from any of the note exchange places or most 7-11 stores. They cost HKD100.00 and last quite some time. You can then buy additional cards from the same places to top it up. You will need to make sure that the USB dongle is not locked to 3 Australia as I am pretty sure that 3HK and 3 Aus are considered different entities. Just go into a 3 store over here to check the dongle out. Don't forget Starbucks have free WiFi as do 90% of McDonalds. McD's make a nice cheap coffee so you can sit down and use their wifi. I stay at the Nathan Hotel which is a 4 star but very room rates on Kowloon side and they have free wifi included for next time you go over. Where are you staying?

3 HKG is indeed different to 3 AU. Different MCC's (a device is typically locked to an MCC and/or an MNC. For a list have a look here: Mobile Network Code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

I seem to have 2 usernames LOL. I'm staying at Harbour Plaza Metropolis. Apparently internet connection at the hotel is rather pricey.
