Hi, Been a Gold member now for 3 years and just re-qualified for gold again this month. I am flying to USA in October and have read that some people have been getting a free upgrade to business class and was just wondering what the best way would be to try and get a free upgrade.

There is no best way to get a free upgrade, especially as there is platinum above gold.
However, you can use points if you are on an eligible fare.

From my experience today, simply present your economy boarding pass at the gate and wait for the beep. Of course, it helps if you have PrncessK chanting "he's going to get the beep" as you present the boarding pass :).

Really the only way is to hope your flight is oversold in Y and there's no/not many Platinums travelling in Y that will be upgraded before you.

I hope you get lucky!
