Wife and I are off to London next year, first leg is BNE-SIN QF J, arrives SIN 1830 or so.

Next leg is CX J to LHR via HKG at 0645 the following morning.

We'll book a 6Hrs block at the Transit hotel at Changi.

So here's the question; Will we be able to check the bags all the way through to LHR at BNE bearing in mind that the OW rules state something like ; "If the time between connecting oneworld flights is more than 12 hours, you may need to collect your luggage on arrival and check-in again with the outbound carrier"?

"May need" is the statement that has me bothered in that sentence. Do I or don't I?

I'm sure some-one on here has done a similar, if not identical, run before given the near impossibility of getting J awards to LHR ex Australia.

Any help or past experiences?

With that long between flights why not got into Singapore, have dinner and stay somewhere OK in town. Sure the alarm will have to be set early but still sounds nicer than a transit hotel.

I mi had my bags spend more than 12 hours at LAX recently and didn't have any problems. That said yours is overnight which may be the only issue.

Get bags, clear immigration, find cab, get to hotel, eat, sleep then do it all in reverse probably 6 hours later. Pass thanks. I do more than enough crawling out of bed at 0400 when I'm working, not doing it on holidays.

If your bags can't be through checked, Singapore's Changi airports offers a service where they will go get your bags and retag them for your next flight. You would do this through the transit/transfer desk (the service is free of charge). So you shouldn't need to leave the secure air-side area to enter singapore.

If they can't be through checked, and if for some reason the transit service won't re-tag them for you, you go to your hotel first and do not collect the bags on arrival. They will be taken off the baggage belt and stored at left luggage (which is secure). You'd then collect them the next day and check-in for your flight.

You must make sure that you pass immigration in the terminal which you arrived... so if you arrive at T1 you must clear immigration there, even if your transit hotel is in terminal 3. This will ensure you end up at the right left luggage counter.

However - given the transit desk will most likely re-tag them - not too much to worry about.

Each to their own. A 4am alarm sounds better than 12 hours stuck in an airport, even if you're in a transit hotel. I spend far too much time in airports to not want to get out when I can.

Excellent reply MEL_Traveller, just what I was after, thanks for sharing your experience and advice.

And fair enough too, I spend plenty of time travelling but hate burning time unnecessarily. The terminal's got plenty in it and a decent maximised sleep won't go astray.

I have seen people on QF51 get boarding passes for their UL flight SIN/CMB the next day departing around 1030 which was about 16 hours after their arrival the previous day.

You'll need to see a QF CSA at BNE Airport to have the CX flights added in as on-carriage as you can't do that at the kiosks.

The system decides if it will tag bags to the final destination which depends on what parameters are in place for the airport in question.

My guess is that the bags will be tagged through to LHR and you may or may not get your CX boarding passes, however I would do OLCI for CX or if not possible get them on arrival at the transfer desk or even the lounge the next day.

I'm sure you've already done so but allocate your seats asap after booking. Too many people in premium cabins still leave it until they get to the airport.
