When daughter was born I had a hard time sourcing Aptamil Gold+ Stage 1 formula. Plenty of Stage 2/3/4 formula available. Some weekends I'd run around to 3-4 Woolworths/Coles before I could find any. If not then I'd go late Saturday night as they were stocking shelves.

Then daughter turned 6 months and needed to switch to Aptamil Gold+ Stage 2 formula. Same issues as before. I'd see a dozen Aptamil Gold+ Stage 1 but no Stage 2 formula.

Now daughter is nearly 14 months and you guessed it. Very difficult to find Apramil Gold+ Stage 3 formula on the shelves but plenty of Stage 1 and Stage 2 formula. It's almost as if no one wants the Stage 1 formula.

I'm now playing a new game. Anytime I see Aptamil Gold+ Stage 4 formula on the shelves I purchase 1 tin. Current expiry is June 2019 so should be ok to use in 10 months time?

So is life out to get me or just another in the lost list of coincidences? ;) All you can do is laugh and take the low punches....

Is there a particular medical need for using Formula beyond 12 months? When my girls were babies the nurses said to go onto regular cows milk after 12 months. This comes in lots of varieties, for example soy, lactose free etc. It's much cheaper than formula. By this stage most toddlers are eating enough solids to get other nutrients.

Well Dames you have talked us into it. We have just booked a Transatlantic on QM2 in October next year.
Oh you totally needed no convincing. Details? Steerage? Get the gowns and tux ready!

That’s a good point. Are formula companies driving some kind of false consumer requirement here? If eating is well established and with healthy diet of all the food groups and lots of veggies and proteins there’s really no need for this.

I just noticed this at the bottom of the page. Is it a new feature?

I'm not sure. I've just assumed that we'll keep daughter on baby formula for first 2-3 years. Daughter's eating solids but think it will take time to get the balance right.

My daughter is 2.5. she's been drinking full fat cow's milk since 1. Only in the morning and at night now, although not every day anymore.

Way too long and not necessary once normal diet is established UNLESS it’s on medical advice.

My brother gives my little nephew A2 milk. I looked into the actual literature and did a paper on it and couldn't find any corroborating evidence that A2 is any better. This was 7 years ago and the evidence is still questionable.

I think A2 is only 'better' if there's a problem with A1. All milk has A1 and A2 and this special variety doesn't have A1 which may or may not cause issues for some. So it's very hard to know I think.

I've obviously misunderstood the need to continue with baby formula past 12 months. As mentioned I was under the impression we continue with baby formula until daughter is 3.

Will check with wife to start introducing milk to baby's diet.

When do babies give up the bottle these days?

I thought they still used them for night time when they were 2 or 3 but someone at work was all, "hell no" and judging me. Figured none of my 10 nephews and niece turned out serial killer so no harm done.

Sometimes I think we are too tough on babies and kids. Of course there is an upper age limit - same applies with toilet training - a real minefield that is!

I breast fed mine for various amounts of time (Dr FM was short changed at 18 months, but Ms FM managed to keep going until 3). Anyway around 2, after weaning, Master FM suffered from bottle envy. A little friend of his used to walk around with a bottle and he refused to drink any milk until we bought a bottle and put the milk in it. Can’t remember how long that went on - at least a year and of course I had no idea what to do with a bottle or sterilise it or whatever you are supposed to do, but he seemed to survive as well :)

Hilarious. You did good - I stopped sterilising the bottles after about 6 months.

Dodgy science consisting of observational studies, low power studies eg 15 subjects...

Trivia: human breast milk is A2

I could never get my head around it. Parents sterilising bottles when the kid is touching everything and putting it in its mouth.

Baby formula is a Western construct.
1 year max
Wonder how all those babies without access to formula thrived?.

Well - not so much until they start crawling. Until then it’s pretty much controlled.
Certainly 30 years back once the child went on to cows milk there was no such thing as toddler milk. Agree and I posted earlier that parents are being sucked in by the producers of these products. Unless there are diet kind of issues it’s a waste of money.

Those Chinese buyers who buy out entire store supply of formula should be allowed to. We don’t need powdered milk here. Us Aussies should be drinking real liquid milk. Leave the pretend stufff to the visitors

Milk producers should make liquid baby formula in a bottle or collapsible disposable container. Complete with single use plastic nipples !!!. Now there is a real marketing idea.

There are some infants who may need it but parents can’t source it.

They do this in the USA.
