So I made a deal the boss to bypass company policy and fly W instead of J so I could attend an event in the UK. My first plan was to fly QF as that is where I have all frequent flyer benefits and I usually just scrape my Gold renew each year (I need 410sc by end of November). But prices for QF W in May are in excess of $6000, while premium economy on BA, Cathay and Singapore are all below $4000 from SYD. So the options are:
a) Book flexi Y on QF and gamble on using my points to upgrade to J
b) Fly CA in W, and get the same points as Y on QF (or do I? I can't reconcile the QF point calculator and the partner charts)
c) Fly CA in W, scrape points out of Accor and IHG to Asia Miles, credit outwards flight to same program, then request upgrade to J on return. Forego any SC.
d) Fly BA, and be disappointed in their offering. Credit to QF
e) Fly Singapore, get the best experience, and use Priority Pass in Singapore and UK on return. End up with small Krisflyer point balance.

Thoughts on best option? If I fly BA, I can arrive in Leeds, everyone else I can arrive in Manchester, but all an option for LHR.

Have you looked at Finnair? Maybe do QF to Singapore onwards on fin? I heard they have some good pricing

With the current QF Asia Sale, this is definitely a good idea. QF Y to Asia and a cheap Finnair Business from there. Do it with an agent and you'll get it in one PNR and save the hassles of the enhanced baggage rules!

How's flying in a lower cabin making a deal or do you usually fly another airline in J that costs the same as PE on QF?

It would probably be cheaper to but a ticket in whY eg BNE/SIN/BNE either a sale fare or saver fare if you want to use points for the chance to upgrade to J then just buy a ticket ex SIN in J SIN/LHR/SIN for approx AUD2,000.00 return. You may even be able to go via SYD and grab a sale fare in PE to HKG or HND then another ticket in J ex HND or HKG but probably wouldn't be as cheap as ex AU to SIN.

Some overseas travel is better than no travel. As the trip is not really work sending me, but me asking if I can go, I would have been happy with Y. If I knew how much PE on QF was, I might have tried the cheaper J airline position, but I really had no idea how much of a premium QF are asking above SG, CA and BA. Fly QF almost exclusively.

That's fair enough. :p

They must be a pretty good crowd to work for seeing as though some companies make employees fly whY even when it is for work.

Or forget status all together and buy Viet Nam airlines return to Europe for $4224 with full flat beds all the way (ex SYD/MEL).

Buy a QF club membership if you really need lounges for the rest of the year :)

Thanks all.
Tickets issued QF in Y ARM>SYD>HKG, AY in J to HEL>MAN and same return. But the TA issued my QF tickets in N class so I cant request an upgrade for the overnight HKG>SYD:(. Expecting 440SC and 25,700QF points for this trip compared to ~320sc and 51,600 points based on QF calculator.
