Hi AFF members,

Flying to Mauritius later this year and am tossing up whether to fly business as it's 11.25 hrs from Melb, and they are not exactly a flash airline... my husband refuses to pay the extra $$ and is happy in econ as he is able to get into a "zone' whilst flying, and whY does not bother him. He is happy for me to go J, but i feel awful...my only thought was to swap seats with him every now and then, so i don't feel so guilty...surely no one would notice... or is this heavily patrolled by the fa's ???
Thanks

Not sure re Air Mauritius but my wife and I managed to do it SIN-LHR back in '04 as her upgrade came through and mine didn't. Strictly speaking it is a no can do but wait until it's dark and try your luck.

Leave him back there and enjoy the flight:cool:

+1 - why the guilt?

I'm sure there are things in life he likes to spend more money on than you (or maybe not). Either way, enjoy J - if he choses to be in Y, his decision to suffer.

If you fly Business class, you will be allowed into the lounges, with him as a guest of yours, you could ask ever so humbly for an ugrade for him. It has worked for me on BA

A few key phrases here: "my husband refuses to pay the extra $$$" ".....is happy in econ"....."whY does not bother him"....."he is happy for me to go J". All of the above equals your 'get out of jail free' card.

Kick the word guilty out of your vocabulary right now! If you don't you won't be able to enjoy the whole J experience. If prompted maybe the crew might even take a nice glass of J bubbly back to him.

I could understand you feeling guilty if for example he wanted to go J but an upgrade request didn't come through or your company paid for you to travel J, however neither is applicable in this scenario.

Now sit back, relax and enjoy the friendly service.

...and if he is getting up and sneaking into J, he might snap out of his "zone".
Can't risk that. :)

As with all the others - let him enjoy his time in whY and you enjoy your time in J.

And if he changes his mind for the return journey ... from http://www.airmauritius.com/attheairport.htm:

Upgrading at Airport
Subject to seat availability, a passenger holding an economy class ticket may request for upgrading to Business Class at SSR International Airport in Mauritius against payment of a supplement. We will be pleased to assist you with all information at the time of check-in.

Number 1, fundamental, incontrovertible rule of marriage: Happy wife = Happy life.

Like most others have said, stay up the pointy end and leave him down the back. He'll be happy if you're happy :D

Thankyou for all the marvelous responses ! I was laughing all evening about the " out of his zone" comment and all the others.
Ok, I feel comfortable now.

Yes.. the cabin crew WILL notice if you sneak in an change seats without telling them, and they will send hubby back. Also other passengers may complain. (I know i would as I consider it an issue for the security of my hand luggage etc... I don't want unidentified passengers entering the cabin while I am asleep... increases the risk of theft etc)

Sometimes crew will allow passengers to swap once during a flight... usually any time after the meal service. But then you can't swap back again. Not sure however if this is Air Mauritius (MK) policy.

Air Mauritius is not a bad airline. They are fine.

Not 100% sure with MK, but for most airlines business class passengers, without status, are not permitted guests. This holds true for all star, skyteam and oneworld airlines. for example... a QF biz class passenger cannot take in a guest unless they are gold or higher (or a QF club member). You might however be able to buy lounge access to the MK lounge.

Otherwise if hubby is happy with economy then I would take it and not worry :)

As he does not want to fly J for his own personal reasons, and apparently enjoys or has no problem flying Y (zone), you must remember that you are making him feel better by letting him remain there. I think that if you were to swap seats during the flight (although it happens, I don't know if this permitted) he might feel that he is placing you in a position where you are uncomfortable and if he loves you he wouldn't want to do that. I think you have come to the correct decision, and in the end, he will feel better knowing that you are happy.

I think MK will use QF lounge in Melb, which I have a couple of passes for anyway, so no big deal there.

Yeah I'd probably be annoyed by swapping pax as well, if they were making a big ruckus and noise...but otherwise wouldn't care as long as there was only ONE person there at any given time.....
Might consider going ex PER now to break it up a bit.

Someone might be able to confirm but aren't lounge passes only valid if your next flight is on QF/JQ or another OneWorld carrier?

Noise and ruckus is not the issue for me... but security and privacy is .... i don't want to have to keep one eye open to see who is about and accessing overhead lockers (and my cabin baggage) for the whole flight. I have had an item taken from my seat in coach, but never in a premium cabin... (touch wood :))

They're only valid if the flight is on QF/JQ. Not even on other OneWorld carriers, as I found out when trying to use one before a BA flight ex SYD :(

That is not correct - if flying J on QF you are permitted a guest:

One guest permitted if travelling on a Qantas operated and marketed flight

Note that the PER-MRU flight departs at the delightful hour of 02:30. :(
yeah I know, but i guess more chance of bombing out to sleep as soon as on board....well for me anyway...
This desitination is not simple to get to...I've even tried all the combos going via Asia but really that just drags it out further. Hopefully it's worth the effort !

I can confirm the destination is certainly worth the effort. However... I disageee in that the destination really couln't be much more simple to get to... it has direct flights (albeit long :)) Unlike for example the Seychelles or Male etc which require change or aircraft and transits.
