HSBC Star Alliance credit card in Australia

The race is on! I've applied, been accepted, apparently my card is on the way. I need someone to intercept it for me (I'm overseas), spend the 4k (easy enough to do with bills piling up), FINALLY managed to get an Air Canada number (took 4 browsers over 3 different devices before I found one that didn't insist I was using a VPN). And try to get it all before I fly out with (urgh) economy AC on the 7th of March.

Ambitious? Perhaps.

Next step, try to actually open a Canadian bank account so I can actually finalise my work visa details.

You won’t get status by 7 march. Once you reach the $4k spend you are given 14 days to confirm your status airline. That can’t be shortened.

I seem to recall that I got mine within 48 hours (but may be wrong).

You have to confirm your status choice by a certain date (was that 14 days, or a longer period like 45 days), or you're given points instead of status (that was my original planned strategy as I was going to use the points and slam them into Singapore, as I had gold with them anyway, but the 50,000 Aeroplan points made that a dumb strategy).

If they give you the details, you can probably add it to your google / apple wallet and spend on it yourself (albeit with conversion fees).

Once you wait the 14 days the status, at least for air canadia comes through pretty quick… like a couple of days. But I don’t think there’s any way to short-circuit the 14 day nomination period?

I checked my email history, and you're right. I was confusing myself between getting the email about Star Alliance status (which was the day after I cleared the $4,000 spend hurdle) and the awarding of status, which was 14 days later.

Just got approved for this card.

Question is, should I opt for Air Canada gold status or Singapore Airlines gold? The former gets you 50k points with Air Canada (I do travel to North America every couple of years), the latter gets you access at Virgin Australia lounges, which I might use 10-15 times a year. Your view?

Value of the awards you can book with 50k aeroplan points, vs an annual lounge membership with VA? Even day passes are $69 for VA? Meaning you’d need less than $690 value from your aeroplan points.

The 50k aeroplan points a can also be used to redeem VA flights, and all other star alliance carriers, so say singapore airlines to asia from australia, or ANA.

edited, doesn’t AC gold give access to VA lounges anyway?

(edited a second time to fix autokorect)

Yes, I believe that Aeroplan's Star Gold equivalent gets Virgin lounge access on VA itineraries.

Air Canada 50K status gets you Virgin lounge access: 'Enjoy the comfort and amenities of Virgin Australia lounges when traveling on Air Canada or Virgin Australia, and the Emirates Business Class Lounges at Dubai International airport (DXB) when traveling on Air Canada or Emirates.'

Does anyone know if you can change the star alliance gold on renewal or future years?

I signed up with Aeroplan initially to get the bonus 50k points but would like to transfer to Krisflyer as you get more VA gold benefits compared to Aeroplan.
