HSBC Star Alliance credit card in Australia

I don't think just paying the fee is enough. If I've read the T&Cs correctly, you also need to have met the minimum spend in your first year which, from recollection, is something absurd like $60K.
Correct. $30K for *A Silver & $60K for *A Gold

A bit OTT in my view given that neither status gets you terribly much & the earn/redemption rate is pretty poor for a dedicated/branded card

I couldn't agree more. The card tops out at, what, $3K a month? That means you're forfeiting earning on about 40% of the $60K you've got to spend. And to then charge a $450 annual fee after having spent that much coin, it's ludicrous.

im still learning the program and agree with you, however, people are raving about this deal, which I dont really know why

gold status is good but for only 12 months for free isnt that special

I certainly see value in the first year. I got the card with the waived annual fee when it was launched and merely spent $3K (although I've been running a lot through it recently to boost my UA balance before I cancel it January). That got me a solid 12 months of status for very minimal outlay. Year 2? Meh.

It is a cracker deal for the first year.

What's there not to like?

First year Annual Fee Free

Star Alliance Gold

If you select Air Canada you get 50,000 bonus Aeroplan points.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Cancel second year if you do not want to keep it.

I already have Star Gold status with United.
Is it possible to select Aeroplan as the Status Partner to get the 50k bonus points but at the same time choose not to get Aeroplan status and instead get the 40k Star Alliance points?
That way I could get 82k airline points, but no status which I don’t need anyway.

It's an awesome deal. If you apply in Jan-24 then you will likely have Gold until end of CY25
But to get this 2nd year you'd have to pay the $450 annual fee.
Cos as reported as soon as you cancel the card the Gold access is cancelled too.

Would have to weigh up if you'd get the $450 value from it.

Probably. Not as you need to select aeroplan as your preferred airline for status to receive the 50 k sign up points .

Yes , after the initial spend criteria is met and SG awarded we need to meet the spend criteria of $60K in the 12 calendar months to retain the star alliance status.

Is there a particular link that needs to be used when applying for the card to receive the 50K point sign up bonus with aeroplan or do you just apply on the HSBC website and then select aeroplan to receive the 50K point bonus?

I applied by starting on the Air Canada website although when I clicked through it seems to just take you to the standard HSBC page for this card and I haven’t seen any other link. Fast track your way to Aeroplan 50K Status with the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card

Now that the excitement has died down for me, ive had a good look at what 50k status gets
And just like velocity and qantas, it appears to be the same extra baggage, prioirty everything, extra miles/%, better bookings and lounge passes

For someone who travels once per year in J+ using miles, definitely not worth the af from year 2

But they gave me a whopping limit so will keep it until end of year 1

Unless im nissing something
