Hopping onto QF9/10 in a month or so and don't want to look like a newbie so what are your tips for handling J like a pro?

When is the right time to put on the PJ's?
Will they try and serve me dinner on departure out of Melbourne?
What's to do in DXB during transit?
Is it the same plane that continues on to LHR?

Tips and funny anecdotes appreciated.

Usually I put on my PJs once the seatbelt sign goes off. Safer to be fully dressed for take-off.
In DXB visit the J lounge.
Yes the same plane, though you will have to take all your belongings with you during the transit.

Put on the PJs in the lounge before you board, that way people will know for sure how experienced you are ;)

Because QF9 leaves quite late I put mine on before we take off (and the toilets are cleaner) - I have been known to get dressed again under a blanket when the cabin is all dark and people are sleeping. If you look at my TR it shows the menus from MEL and yes you get dinner but we were so late leaving that I just went to sleep. There are also some photos of the Emirates lounge in Melbourne and Dubai

Check out the Emirates lounge in Melbourne - it is so much nicer than the QF one - if they query you then you can just say you would like to have a look around and they didn't argue with me

ENJOY - it's VERY VERY hard going back to Y

Who cares if you look like it's your first time? And how could anyone tell, anyway.

Enjoy the lounge, such as it is. The real point of J travel is to earn enough credits to make WP and hence gain entry into the F lounge(s), which is much much nicer.

PJs - once the seatbelt sign is off, go and change. Keep your clothes uncrushed. Do it before they serve a meal, which they will as soon as they can, so that if any sauces or red wine or whatever spill onto your clothing during the feeding frenzy, it's on the PJs, not your good clobber. And likewise change back after the final meal before landing.

DXB. You have roughly an hour before getting back on board the same plane. You'll have to take all your gear with you. There's a transit security and document check, and once through, you can browse the extensive shopping area, or head on up to the lounge. Possibly you can get a shower there, though they usually have a queue of everyone else off your flight, and there aren't that many showers. But I like to give it a decent try, because I usually need a shave at least, and having the full experience sets me up really nicely for the next leg.

The lounge is excellent. And vast. Several dining areas, a quiet room that's about as big as any other lounge I've seen, various computers, reading areas etc. You can board directly from the lounge. They don't call flights inside, but you'll be able to find your gate and hang around there quaffing champers and munching nibblies.

The F lounge is equally vast and amazingly well stocked. A la carte dining, top notch grog, free shoe shines. The decor is a wee bit over the top, and there are some duty-free shops within the actual lounge, and you'll likely get lost, but it's something to aim for. Rack up those status credits!

Enjoy the trip. You'll be comfortable, well looked after, fed and drunk very well, and hopefully clean and rested on arrival.

And, as noted by others, a real wrench to go back to Y!

Don't forget to sneak downstairs mid-flight and use one of the First class loos - quite a popular thing to do for some J pax :)

Please ensure that you lock the toilet door too. I scared a lady in there once when I walked in on her. I must admit that she scare me too!

Have a great time and enjoy the experience. Eat & drink as much as you can without feeling uncomfortable!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Don't even think about what others are thinking. Lots of them are only interested in you looking at them.

Enjoy the ride and plan for the next one.

I'd be willing to bet that there are other pax experiencing J for the first time as well, and besides most people are too caught up in what they are doing to care what others are doing. Finally assuming you do come across someone whom does care, chances are once the flight is over you'll never see them again anyway.

Agreed... :(

Is this done quickly on QF9/10

You could take the FAs a little box of Lindt and quietly tell them it's your first time in J, (I was actually surprised to read that it is your first). I reckon they will treat you even more kindly than normal.

First International J in a very long time.

I happily keep my WP status the old fashioned way 20 status credits at a time domestically. Way too many trips to the airport...

Of course. It's right there in your profile. Give you joy of the Flounges along your way. The Qantas lounges are very good, but the Emirates lounge(s) in Dubai is extraordinary.

Immediately after entering the plane, secure carry-on, ask FA if you could have a hanger and also which is the larger of the toilets as one of them is usually bigger for handicap etc. Change into your PJ's, put your clothes on the hanger and insert your boarding pass into the shirt/coat pocket and hand to FA who will look after it from there on. Obviously, ensure you remove personnel items from pockets etc. I would quietly advise the FA it is your first time in international J and you may be surprised at how much extra attention you receive from them.

Exactly as Macca says!

Until the part about advising the FA, they already know you are WP. Pretty sure the also know your flight habits in general. One good thing about QF, is the crew on internationals is usually of a much higher standard than most. Of course, exceptions happen, but I've never had cause to 2nd guess the crew.

Mr Perry's cuisine or Aj's 'ground breaking' Y+ seat....that's another story.

To reach and return WP status you have to do a lot of flying, but this is his first time in international J.

yes, got that. but even so, the CSM will already have a breakdown of the OP's flight history, be that Dom or Int and J or Y.

And the OP wanted to not look like they were a noob in j.
