Travelling economy: Why should I be expected to further restrict my already cramped space by placing my only piece of carry on luggage, a small, day pack size item, under my feet to make room in the overhead for the guy with a full size (at least) wheelie carry on bag and a bulky suit bag.

Because thems the rules and it is first in best dressed. :p

Seriously there always seems to be plenty of room to fit in a small backpack anyway. I'm yet to see an overhead that is stuffed full. Just put on top of the suit bag. I once had a guy in his seat try to tell not to put anything on his suit bag because he didn't want his shirts crumpled. Well he should have thought about that before laying it down to occupy maximum overhead space and not laying on top of his other bag. In the end I was nice and lifted his suit pack up to put my luggage underneath.

Another tip if you can make space. Do it, I say.

I have yet to be on a flight where I couldn't find at least some room in the overhead bins near by, even if the bin above me was full. Most people seem to be pretty good about sharing the space if you ask them.

On short haul flights, I prefer my backpack to be under the seat in front of me so I can get easy access to my wallet, iPod, book etc.
Must be just strange 'ol me.

Just put on top of the suit bag. I once had a guy in his seat try to tell not to put anything on his suit bag because he didn't want his shirts crumpled.

I’ve had that experience before, a jacket laid out inside the overhead bin so I put my bag on top and the people sat down gruffly asked me to just give it to them instead. Couldn’t believe they thought they should take up the whole volume and get away with it.

Agree with above poster though, lately I’ve found putting my bag under the seat in front is a much better idea, easy access to things and very quick to deplane when arriving.
