I would like to book SYD-HKG-ZRH-VIE using AA points on CX and AB.

My understanding is I can book a one-way AUS-EUR itinerary (like the one above) for 60k in J or 80k in F.

Questions:

  1. Ideally I'd like all legs in F, but as this isn't possible on this routing (CX don't fly F to/from Australia), the best I could do is SYD-HKG CX J, HKG-ZRH CX F and ZRH-VIE AB J. Therefore, how many miles would AA charge me in this instance? Would I have to cop the full 80k even though I only get one sector in F?
  2. Can I buy AA miles using an Australian credit card?
  3. Am I allowed to buy an award flight for someone else using my account/miles?

Thanks

1. You would pay the miles for the highest class - so in your case that would be the F redemption rate unfortunately.

2. Yes, totally fine with an Australian credit card.

3. Yes, totally fine - just notify the agent that the booking is for another person and not the Aadvantage account holder. I just made a booking for a friend through Aadvantage yesterday on my account whereby I was not traveling on the booking.

Hope that clarifies :)

Thanks shannan94. I had guessed this might be the case. Personally, I still see value in this award routing.

and find the sectors before calling and book as far out as possible.

If the time it takes to get to your final destination is not important you could see if you could route the first sector in F by flying JL SYD-NRT then HKG-ZHR-VIE.

I did a similar route in reverse and it priced out at 80K

and find the sectors before calling and book as far out as possible.
Availability on the HKG-ZRH sector CX F/J is reasonable, but the SYD-HKG sector is generally only available either well in advance, or the week prior departure.

How would one manage a booking in this case. Could I book the HKG-ZRH sector first, then a week out when (hopefully) a SYD-HKG seat opens up, call AA and have them add this to the existing booking. Would they combine the bookings and only charge me the total as a single award?
