An article in the SMH Column 8 October 1, asks the question;

"do Qantas jumbo jet captains just jump into their car and drive off like the rest of us, or do they follow an elaborate check list, and never run out of petrol or discover too late that the spare is flat?"

Now if anyone can answer this question it would have to be the people here. Should be some interesting answers.

My father (ex 743, L1011 and 330/340 captain) is very checklist orientated but I have never seen him do a walkaround, though one thing he does very regularly when he drives is check his "P's & T's" (pressure and temps). Was a pain in the cough when learning to drive!!

I hold a PPL.

It's funny jumping back into a car just after you have landed an aircraft, especially if there was a decent crosswind on landing.

You soon realise how easy driving a car really is.... then you soon realise that flying an aircraft is just like driving a car!
