Auckland hospital has cancelled all international travel for staff on business, conference or education. They have also said they will pay staff on 14 day self isolation unless they have been on overseas travel from yesterday. So, no first lounge this month
I am sure there are many others who are in this situation or soon will be
How did you cope. 7 stages of loss?
Our coping mechanism was a glass of champers in the ( outdoor) lounge

My partner works in a regional Victoria hospital. Thankfully the policy for her is that if a staff member knowingly travels to a 'higher risk' destination then 14 days isolation upon return will not be covered. If you have already departed and a location is upgraded to higher risk then 14 days isolation will be paid.
We depart in one week for a two-month Eastern European holiday but have just dropped Italy off the list.

"Higher Risk" in her case is defined by the health.gov.au COVID-19 website

I’ll be the odd one out but now I’m pretty much grounded I’m thrilled. Most know me on here as having a love/hate with my work-compulsory manic travel schedule and it’s been absolutely lovely not having the schelpp of travel over the last few weeks. I honestly miss nothing. I have more time, more energy and even better health.

I’m hoping QF and VA do status extensions for us people grounded with no choice for when travel turns back on though.

I've had 2 international speaking gigs cancelled.

Honestly, I'm more bummed about not getting status credits for the flights. One of the trips organised was ultra-long-haul J.

...

Will be interesting to see how QF and VA play it out.

My guess is that VA will hand out status like candy - which will bankrupt them in 2-3 years from now, despite the strong demand in travel after the media hype blows over.

QF will be more cautious, and creative - and as a result, the airline will thrive in the coming years.

Here's a good read about extending elite status in times of crisis: Should Airlines & Hotels Extend Elite Status in Times of Crisis?

Hi Stevo
did you end up going?

I arrived back in Australia 5 days ago and went straight into isolation into a house that is being sold, but I was told I could stay until the end of the isolation, after that I don't know where I am going to stay, looks as though a tent and a sleeping bag for a while. I am trying to get a short term rental anywhere in Victoria but that is proving to be difficult.
I wonder what all the travellers that have arrived since the self isolation are going to do when their time ends,
especially now that the P.M. has said not to travel, but once again there are too many different situations to cover.

We're planning to go back to Thailand in August. I'm not sure air travel will return to normal by then and demand could be very high if it does return with over inflated airfares.

I don't really want to spend a premium for flexible airfares so we may have to do without next overseas trip which would put a dampener on morale.

I have more time, more energy and even better health.
I was originally frustrated but the above is definitely something that rings true. Sadly, now I can't get out to the gym.

The biggest thing for me is how much it costs to live without travel during the week! Buying food is damn expensive!

I told myself - no travel! It was a very simple decision.

Better still, cancellation cost have been sorted via TI or airline action.

We did end up going but as you can expect - it didn't last long.

The very start of our trip was to Ireland and we arrived the day the 'Reconsider your need to travel' advice was issued. We decided to pull the pin as soon as France essentially shut up shop.

We are now enjoying our 14 day holiday at home but have been quite lucky in many regards. Our travel insurance was purchased back in October so we are able to claim pretty much all that which hasn't already been refunded. Unfortunately, we were traveling on reward Y tickets so when we pulled the pin to fly home we had to purchase one-way Flex Y tickets for us both which did cost a pretty penny. Luckily though, my employer recalled me from leave about 12 hours after we booked our flights home. My employer will reimburse the cost of both my and my partner's flights home.

We had a good think about canceling before we departed Aus. We called our travel insurance to see what we were covered for. All medical costs and disruption/delay costs of any sort COVID-19 related or not were covered. They did make the point though that if we simply change our mind and no longer want to travel then we wouldn't be covered.

We left, had a lovely 4 days (and a sober St. Patrick's day) in Ireland and now home. We are not out of pocket much at all. It's now a funny story for the future and an excuse to start planning the next trip in a year's time or so.
