How about a SYD-TSV direct flight again QF?

With the return of QF flights to OOL I was thinking it was about time for a direct (non JQ) flight from SYD to TSV. I have to go there a lot and since DJ comped me SG last year I've moved all my flying to them by virtue of their direct flights (DJ1519 and 1520). Years ago QF used to fly a lot more direct flights and even those that flew via BNE only had about a 30 minute break. Now they are all via BNE and the break there is up to 1.5 hours meaning it takes most of the day to fly SYD-TSV, especially in summer coming home with DST.

DJ's flights are cheap too most of the time - $129 one way most of the time vs $279 with QF (or $209 at a pinch). It's a no-brainer but I'd like it not to be. There's no DJ lounge in TSV which is a pain and I'd like to spread my loyalty a little.

Even one flight a day (like DJ) on a 737 would be nice!

Just a note to the powers-that-be...

Unfortunately the minimum connection time in BNE is 40 minutes and with the way QF schedules the departures from SYD and arrivals into BNE it makes the connection to TSV ~1h 15m.

What are the loads like on Virgin's Townsville flights?

Virgin are getting a lounge at TSV, there was an article about it in the local paper.

Self-interest aside (I've done TSV-BNE-DRW-BNE-TSV in a day JASA so I know) would a direct flight have any bearing on the availability of the JASA deal?

I'd heard about the Lounge but I wonder where it will go. The old QF QP was the wrong side of security, perhaps that's where it will be.

Loading is pretty good on the DJ direct flights. I usually have an empty seat next to me in 3A but not always and often there's less than 10 empty seats, apart from J which was empty for a long time but now has a few occupants.

SYD-xBNE-TSV JASA? It only earns 100 SC so it's good but not the best out there.

Pretty much the same situation as me! The Jetstarization of SYD-TSV basically gave all of QF's SYD-TSV business directly to DJ. I find the loads on DJ direct SYD-TSV service are generally pretty good as well. I don't find the QF connection times too bad in BNE but maybe I have just been lucky. Once DJ get their own lounge in TSV then that will be great, hopefully it will be airside....

Doubt it, its apparently using the old international area which does not have aero bridges, and will be a considerable walk to the gate area.

Good point - lots of wasted space in the terminal, new VA lounge could go next door to QF Lounge if a large area of offices can be re-arranged/sacrificed. At the moment the International departure/arrivals area does not link up with the rest of the domestic terminal either airside or landside. Considering the airport was only refitted a few years ago you would have thought someone would have planned it better. As it stands now - about 20% of the footprint of the terminal is dedicated to an International area that gets used about 4 hours per year when the army guys go on rotation in or out of Afghanistan.

I would think that VA Lounge management would insist that a non-ariside lounge is pretty much worthless to VA. Its up to them and Townsville Airport to re-arrange floor space more effieciently.

What office space, those grey squares are the baggage areas, inbound and outbound, there is no spare spot for a DJ lounge other than the international area which is connected landside. Beach culture is gone, so they could use that and make it a double story, but its on record that the international area is where it will be.

As I recall the original QP was to the left past the check in counters or was it where the DJ counters are now? It was pretty small, although the new one isn't big it all.

Are there no other INT flights to/from TSV? Have there been others in the past?

It was where the DJ counters are now, and the baggage conveyors, no international flights since Strategic.
