Hotelclub are now showing hotels in Australia at the ex-gst rate and adding in gst when finalizing the purchase.

Very bad behaviour. Something for people to be aware of.

Isn't that illegal?

I would have thought so as well,

Hotelclub is probably not an Australian based company - so it would not be illegal for them to conduct their business in such a way(?). (Recently I got v/burnt by Agoda - the webpage displayed $87 per night and on payment, it ended up something like $117 pn for Japan)

Hotelclub has an Australian site and hq. It is illegal behaviour.

Only recently occurred so think its just a system issue that will be fixed.

Problem appears to be fixed. Good to see them comply with the appropriate regulations...

I seem to recall HotelClub had all inclusive rates everywhere not just Australia.

In my opinion this is where HotelClub had the edge over sites such as Agoda and Booking.com etc as they had the all inclusive rate up front. Now I see the rate and think fantastic and then click on further to find that thay are also adding +++ to the rate.

Hotel advertising definitely needs to be improved to be all inclusive. Agoda also caught me out once.

Even the little banners that say

"Save 50% off hotel rooms." (umm 50% off what?)
"Only one room at this price." (until you book and we release another.)
"No cancellation fee on some rooms" (how useless...but not the room that is displayed next to this banner.)

The agoda confirmation page is particularly misleading. It does display the room rate and the tax amount...it just doesn't clarify if the room rate as displayed on the confirmation page includes it.

Mal may actually be right in an earlier post. I booked a room in Ladkrabang last night and it would appear the rate displayed was the rate charged at booking time. Perhaps it was a website issue that has not been fixed.

"Save 50% off hotel rooms." (umm 50% off what?)
Some say 70% off hotel rooms. And that discount is on rack rates that no one is ever likely to pay unless they are booking at the last minute and are extremely desperate. Means nothing though as the price displayed is rougly the same as the rate I paid last time.

The agoda confirmation page is particularly misleading. It does display the room rate and the tax amount...it just doesn't clarify if the room rate as displayed on the confirmation page includes it.
And the interesting one with Agoda is when choosing more than 1 room they do not display a total price but rather a per night rate.
