hi All, heading to Hong Kong for a few nights for an event.

I've been to Hong Kong previously, but only ever transited through or stayed at the airport hotels. I've wandered around the Honk Kong Island side, never been over to Kowloon side (I think I have that correct after looking at the maps).

any advice on where to stay in terms of area/location for a few nights would be cool. I can choose a hotel or airBNB then in that area

thanks in advance

Tsim Sha Tsui would be nice and handy to most things and you can walk everywhere. That's if you have already been over to HK Island.

Personally I find it is so easy to get around on the trains there that I'm not too fussed if I'm in Kowlooon or on the Island. I'd probably just go based on the hotel/accommodation that I wanted.

Personally I like Kowloon, preferably near Kowloon Park, as there is lots to do within walking distance, but as Daver6 said, add kind add your are near the trains, it doesn't matter that much.

Your choice should be governed by what your planned activities include. I've stayed in Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, Causeway Bay and Stanley previously. For most tourist type activities Tsim Sha Tsui would be fine.

Island side is more business oriented hence more quiet but hotels are usually expensive, at least on weekdays.
Kowloon side is more touristy and busy. The good hotels (sometimes same brands) will usually be cheaper there.

ok thanks. the main thing we are going to is out at the airport on the Saturday evening. outside of that, having a look around, restaurants, bars, seeing the light show, the Peak etc etc is what we will get around to doing. Like I mentioned, first time there for my wife and my previous visits have been pretty much short term transits with not much time or on business the whole time.

this time it's a bit different for us.

I like the advice about just going with a hotel we like and making sure it's near a decent metro station.

Has anyone used airBNB in Hong Kong? is it fairly stable in the Asian cities? I imagine it is ...

TST can be extremely busy so I've been switching across to Wanchai of late. Far less crowds and love just sitting on the old trams, the last piece of old Hong Kong they haven't destroyed
Agree with this.
As others have also said the PT is fantastic so just pick a good hotel and you will be fine. I’m quite partial to views and high rooms so that usually sways my choice

Kowloon near TST is great for "first timers" - easy access to Nathan Rd, Subway, Star ferry etc

yeah, the hotel we have at the moment is right on top of the Jordan station.

Might have a look for a place further down Nathan Rd, towards the Star Ferry terminal ...

is the Star Ferry the one that you take to the Island and back?

The last time I was there i stayed at the Hyatt Regency TST. Very nice. The immediate area is not heaving, but it's a 2 minute walk to Nathan Rd/MTR and round the corner from a great coffee roastery.

You may also consider somewhere in TST East, so closer to Hung Hom station, giving you a more direct route on the train up to the NT if you wanted to go there.

Can recommend the Holiday Inn Kowloon as a great location (Star Ferry end of Nathan Rd, across rd from TST station entrance) - although some floors are currently being renovated, hours of renovation are 10a-7p. Rooms decent size by HK standards. Rooftop pool are is nice. Good "sports" bar and staff excellent.

anyone have any tips on using the MTR networks - mainly train and star ferry - while in HKG? We will need to catch the train around a bit. We need to get out to the Asia World Expo site on Saturday evening as well as our trip in when we arrive and trip out when we depart (so 4 trips on the airport express). then also a bunch of station hopping over the 3 days.

looking on their site, there is a tourist day pass for 65HKD that goes for 24 hrs unlimited ... but what about just buying an Octopus card and just loading that up as we need to ...

I've only ever caught the airport express and taxis around the place, so not sure about the fares etc on the MRT.

thanks in advance.

I prefer to get the octopus card and load it up. Can use it for some shopping, food outlets and vending machines aswell so it comes in quite handy. Some taxis also accept it and I believe the government is pushing for all taxis to have it available.
Just return the card when you leave and you will get your deposit back aswell as any unused credit

^^ yeah thanks. that's what I have been leaning towards doing ...

I did find this link ... airport trips and 3 days of travel & then bring it back for the 50HKD when we leave. only for tourists ... seems like a good deal
