Greetings from sunny Melbourne!

This will become my first ever trip report, so please have mercy. My partner and I are leaving on Thursday and Friday respectively, so if you're only into photos and experiences, please come back next week :). In the meantime I'll be posting some background info of the planning that went into the trip over the next few days. Again, feel free to ignore until we get to the real stuff.

What you can expect:

  • TG F class travel to Frankfurt
  • Sightseeing around Frankfurt, including a Bundesliga match
  • A 1,600 km road trip down to Switzerland and then north again ending in Berlin
  • Some sightseeing in and around Bern, Lucerne, Stuttgart and Berlin
  • AF and KL Y flights intra-Europe
  • Newcastle and a Rugby World Cup game
  • EK J and F flights to BKK
  • Bangkok sightseeing and shopping
  • SQ J flights back to MEL

Hope you enjoy.

Cheers

At the very beginning, before I forget it, let me quickly start with some shout-outs for some fellow AFFers that have already contributed to making this TR happen:

  • Mattg, boomy and UpInTheAir for their inspiration, with their great Germany/Switzerland-related TRs over the past few months
  • anat0l for his handy tips on Switzerland
  • drron and mrs.drron for their tips on Bangkok (and their great TR recently)
Thank you all!

Mid 2014 I was approaching 1 million points across various airline and hotel loyalty programs, and I thought it was finally about time to start burning them big time. I used some of them occasionally for domestic flights where it made sense, for a hotel booking that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive (like Sydney NYE last year), or used up my 60,000 Lufthansa Miles&More points before they expired for a trip to Tahiti with NZ, or my EK points for an F award AKL-MEL, again to avoid expiry, but never in a grand way. But this was about to change…

Having never really flown in premium classes (except the EK F award mentioned above which we were able to do twice thanks to EK ;-), some VA domestic op-ups and free upgrade certificates, and a journey in QF PE to Europe two years ago), it was clear we want to burn the points for flights in F or J, at least on the long-haul legs.

Having moved to Melbourne 6 years ago, we always wanted to go back to Germany visiting friends and family, so it was agreed quite early that Europe will be our destination. I had originally thrown the US West Coast into the ring, as I have never been and want to go to Seattle to see the Boeing factory, Vancouver, San Francisco, LA, Vegas… But then my partner convinced me: “If we go to Europe, we could also go to the Rugby World Cup in England.” Sounds like a good idea to me! We’re both big All Blacks supporters (sorry Aussies) and made a commitment a few years ago to see at least one All Blacks game live every year and have been to Auckland the past two years and Sydney the year before. So that would mean: 2015 – tick!

Checking out the RWC schedule sometime mid last year, we figured out (a) it is in bl**dy September/October, “great” time for England and a trip to Europe in general (would have preferred northern summer obviously); and (b) the All Blacks were playing Tonga in Newcastle on October 9th (we settled on attending one game only given we wanted to spend most time in Germany). This was particular good news as I always wanted to go back to Newcastle, where I spent 6 months at uni back in 2005. The city is always great for a visit, and St James Park is an amazing venue.

It turned out getting tickets for the RWC wasn’t as straightforward as I imagined it to be. Being from Germany and not knowing much about rugby before moving to Australia, I thought “Well how many people want to go to a Rugby World Cup? Can’t be too many…” or “Who in England wants to see NZ vs Tonga, especially in Newcastle, far away from London…?” Well, how wrong I was… (cont’d later)

In the middle of all our brainstorming and planning, friends of ours from Switzerland all of a sudden invited us to their wedding, to be held near Lucerne in late August. What now? Wedding? RWC? We can’t do both, I can’t get more than 3-4 weeks off at work. What do we do? So we made the only sensible decision (for any true All Blacks fan): if we get tickets, we go later and go to the All Blacks game in Newcastle (and still visit our friends in Switzerland). If we don’t get tickets, we go earlier and attend the wedding.

To be continued....

Sounds like a great trip - looking forward to reading more

Looking forward to following along. Jealous that you're able to get to even one RWC game. There just wasn't any way for me to make it happen this time around.

Good timing, weather-wise. How long is this trip?

Continued:

So we entered the first round of RWC ticket sales, which was held as a ballot… and missed out. Demand for tickets was through the roof. Oh well, what now? Okay, let’s wait for the 2nd round of ticket sales, which is a live sale process. Also, anyone who missed out in the ballot was given access to a pre-sale, so maybe there was still a realistic chance to get our hands on tickets? Hopes were rising again.

In the meantime, I had already booked the flights over to Europe, using my Lifemiles that I bought some months earlier. I did not want to hold off any longer so booked as soon as flights for our dates became available, for 2 reasons: (1) availability and (2) the Lifemiles award cost increase (from 105k to 115k for AU-EU F one-way), which became effective a few days days later. So our departure date was now set as 18 and 19 September respectively (with my partner leaving a day earlier and going via MUC due to limited availability). Worst case I would have cancelled and made a new booking if we were going to the wedding instead.

What I booked was:
SYD-xBKK-FRA TG F (Lifemiles) for me; and
SYD-xBKK-MUC TG F (Lifemiles) and MUC-FRA LH Y (paid) for +1

My partner’s booking was affected by TG’s schedule change. He was originally booked on the 2:40pm departure (TG472), which has since been rescheduled to a late-night departure resulting in a misconnect to the Munich flight. That took me a few days to sort out, via Avianca and their “Operational Interruptions” department or whatever it is called. But in the end they changed the booking to the 10am departure (TG476) on the same day.

As we’re based in Melbourne I also had to organise positioning flights to SYD, which I booked months later on VA during one of their sales. And, given the TG flight leaves SYD at 10am, it was only safe to fly up the night before and stay overnight, so booked accommodation at the Rydges Airport Hotel as well, again months later.

Back to the RWC tickets: preparing for the worst, we were looking for alternatives to the Newcastle game. The only appealing and fitting substitute was the game against Georgia in Cardiff the week before. So this was now our plan B (and the wedding in Switzerland was demoted to plan C ;) ). Checking out hotels, normal rates were already north of GBP 250 per night during these dates for even very average hotels, so I booked 2 nights at Holiday Inn Cardiff North and 3 nights at Holiday Inn Newcastle Jesmond using my IHG Rewards points, both reservations fully refundable of course.

Finally, during the pre-sale which was on in late November we got tickets for the Newcastle game (yippee!). A price category higher than we originally wanted, but so be it (beggars can't be choosers). Cancelled the Cardiff hotel the next day, told our friend we’re not coming to the wedding, and now could move on to booking the return flights and the intra-European flights.

First to the intra-European flights: for our travels around Germany and Switzerland we elected to go by car. Simple reason: Autobahn. That's one of two things I am missing most in Australia: driving really fast on the Autobahn, and an efficient high-speed train network. I am usually a 100% loyal Hertz customer, but on this occasion we elected to go with Sixt, simply because we wanted a special premium car with a good chance of a powerful engine. And Hertz' German fleet is very...average...in this regard, while Sixt has much better premium vehicles. So we booked a BMW 4-Series Coupe (or similar) for a week, for our trip from Frankfurt via Switzerland and Stuttgart to Berlin. Also, curtesy of Air Berlin's oneworld Gold Status match (which I got matched with my Velocity Gold) you can sign up for Sixt Platinum membership, which should give you an upgrade and other perks.

Then we had to get to Newcastle somehow. We have to leave from Berlin on the 7th of October (due to the 3-night hotel booking we now had), and return to Frankfurt on the 10th, as we need to commence our return journey to Melbourne no later than the 11th, ideally from FRA. There are not too many options when going to the North East unfortunately. NCL is a sizable airport, but flights to/from Germany are very limited.

Back in 2005 when studying in Newcastle, I often used Ryanair HHN-STN and then connected to Easyjet STN-NCL; that always worked a treat. But there are no flights between Stansted and Newcastle anymore I found out. Once I flew LH, which for some odd reason not be known to me flew to NCL from DUS only (it must have been the only LH destination not served from FRA or MUC). This flight has now been handed over to LH’s LCC, Germanwings aka Eurowings, who does not fly to FRA. And as they do not interline or codeshare between LH and 4U, I couldn’t use this option either to get back to FRA.

Looking at alternative ports, MAN is still quite far away (3 hrs by car and even longer by train). EDI would be better (1.5 hrs by train), but getting to EDI was not much easier in the first place. Smaller airports in the northeast such as Leeds or Durham-Tees Valley were no options either.

So this really only left 3 viable options: SN/BM via BRU, BA via LHR, or KL/AF via AMS or CDG. I would have preferred BA due to the fact that connecting at LHR T5 is really easy and efficient, and I could earn QFF points and SCs. But: timing for the return flight NCL-LHR-FRA was horrible. Either depart NCL at 6am, or have a few hours layover at LHR and only get to FRA in the evening. Fares were also not appealing. Discounted. The Brussels option didn’t work because there are no flights between NCL and BRU on Saturdays. Otherwise I would have loved to try them. Pricing wise they also looked good (better than the other 2 options). Anyway, discounted.

This left me with KL and AF. No issues with KL at all for me. I have never flown with them but thinking of them for intra-EU flights and connections via AMS, only positive things come to mind. AMS must be a very efficient and friendly airport to navigate. The opposite impression is what I have of AF and CDG though (also, having never flown them and never been to CDG). In the end, cost and timing of flights were the key factors, so ended up booking AF for the way over and KL on the way back:

TXL-xCDG-NCL AF Y (paid), and
NCL-xAMS-FRA KL Y (paid)

Will be interesting, two new airlines and two new airports for me. We only have a 60 min connection in CDG (on one ticket), so I got a bit nervous this week after reading somewhere intra-T2 MCT is 60 mins, but it actually seems quite straightforward. We’ll need to connect from 2F to 2E and according to the CDG guidelines this should take 25-30 mins, no need to go landside or through security, and only passport control to navigate (as we’ll leave the Schengen zone). And curtesy of Alitalia I now even have Skyteam Gold status, which will us get into the Berlin lounge at least (CDG and AMS may be not enough time).

To be continued....

Following along with interest still but can I just note that AMS to me was a shocker. Twisty-turny terminal building (I landed there and was exiting the terminal), went on forever, poorly signed and very crowded! Surprised me but I recall thinking "never, EVER again".

As you are booked to transit there, possibly not so bad, but check a few terminal maps before you get there.

So finally we just had to get back to Melbourne. I had both QF and VA points at my disposal, and we wanted to do a 2-night stopover in SE Asia, ideally Hong Kong (because we've never been). Looking at CX out of FRA showed no availability in F or J for weekends ever (we had to leave on a Sunday ideally). ZRH or CDG wasn't different, and DUS wasn't announced yet. So we looked for alternatives and decided to split the journey, more expensive of course but at least we got to do a stopover, albeit in BKK again.

So we booked:
EK FRA-xDXB-BKK (J to DXB, then F to BKK) on QFF points
SQ BKK-xSIN-MEL in J on SQ KF points (transferred from VFF)

Given that we were stuck with certain dates (around the RWC and work commitments) this is not an efficient redemption by any means, but it works for us.

Next instalments: the trip itself, coming soon.

So the trip has commenced, +1 flew out to SYD last night and is onboard TG476 right now. Struck lucky with the new F product, seems this is still a bit of a gamble out of SYD. I am leaving tonight on VA891, and will then be on TG476 tomorrow.

I just wanted to mention what a great thing TripIt Pro is. Always used the free version but signed up for the 30-day free trial for Pro for this trip, given the amount of flights we have. So yesterday around noon, got a message from TripIt that +1's flight VA887 got cancelled. Looked it up online on VA homepage and MEL airport homepage immediately, and it still showed as scheduled. Checked 5 mins later again and now it showed cancelled on VA homepage too. Called up to get moved to VA885 leaving 15 mins earlier, and the guy in the call centre says "flight isn't cancelled". Put me on hold for 2 mins, came back and confirmed that yes flight is cancelled and he can move +1 to the earlier flight. Impressed that TripIt got the alert to me earlier than I would have been able to monitor it myself!

That's my experience with TripIt Pro too - even overseas. More than once its put me ahead of the pack in re-booking.

Hello from on-board TG476.

My trip started with a first: my first ever Uber ride, from home to MEL on Friday night. Uneventful, no fuss, cheaper than a taxi and a great driver. Am definitely converted now.

Got to MEL about 2 hrs before my flight and had a very solid experience I must say. I am VA Gold so Priority bag drop was done in 2 minutes, agent confirmed seat next to me was blocked (plane was only 70% full I guess), lounge was quite full but emptied from 6:30pm, nothing special to report. Flight was uneventful also. Watched a ‘History of the Rugby World Cup’ doco on the Virgin Entertainment app, but fell asleep 20 mins in so missed the drinks service. Kept snoozing until we got to SYD, were at the gate 5 mins early. My bags got out very first and 4th (impressed!), quick walk to the shuttle bus stop, waited 10 mins, Rydges bus arrived right on time.

It was my first stay at the Rydges SYD and I quite liked it. Nothing special, a no fuss option for overnight layovers. Will definitely use them again, the convenience of walking to the Intl terminal in the morning is great. It feels a bit sterile though, and I don’t know why they had to design the bathrooms ‘open’. Seems there is enough wasted space in the shower and toilet to properly enclose it, but anyway. Not as nice as the Novotel at AKL but best option at SYD in my view.

Headed to the TG check-in at 7am this morning, no one in line so was on my way again within minutes. Customs and security were also cleared without any delay. This was my first time departing from SYD International (only arrived their twice before), so I was quite curious to see the airside departures area for the first time. And I must say, I quite liked it. Yes it looks like a shopping centre, but feels airy and light.

I wanted to check out the SQ lounge because the photos I saw look amazing. So went there first. Unfortunately the F section is currently closed do to repair works apparently. And the J section was rather underwhelming I must say. Much smaller than I imagined, and basically just a rectangular room with many chairs and a small buffet. Only positive was that it was virtually empty when I arrived, only 3 other guests (the SQ flight was on Final Call I think). Had a light breakfast (average quality) and then headed next door to the NZ lounge, which was much more to my liking. Yes it was full with a lot of families heading to the US and NZ, but still plenty of seating available. Had a proper barista coffee and some more breakfast, which was much better than at SQ. My partner was here yesterday morning and had a Kiwi Martini, but I couldn’t get myself to have one at 8am ;) . Watched the replay of the England-Fiji game and then went down to the gate at 9:15am for our 10am departure. Boarding commenced 10 mins later. Got the exact same plane as my partner yesterday (rego TGY), which did 3 of the SYD runs in a row now according to flightradar24.

Took my seat 1A and the crew helped me settle in. We were pushed back on time and had only a short 5 min wait before taking off. I had pre-booked the Lobster Thermidor, and it was great. Had the caviar as a starter, even better! All being washed down with some Dom. Watched ‘Spy’ for some light entertainment, and now typing up this instalment of the trip report while cruising over Darwin.

I didn’t take any photos of the VA flight, the Rydges or the SYD airport bits though, but will post some pics of the TG flight later.
