Hi

Travelling HKG to MEL in first class (QFF points) and therefore allowed a 40kg limit baggage allowance, then we're on a MEL-SYD flight the next morning in economy (paid fare) due to the HKG-MEL leg getting in too late at night to catch a domestic back to sydney that night.

My question - As the baggage limit for 1st class is far greater than allowed for on the economy domestic flight from Melb to Sydney, how will we go if we are over the weight limit for this leg -which I'm sure we will be.

When I asked this question to Qantas FF customer service, he suggested that I keep my boarding pass from the HKG-MEL flight to show that we flew into Melbourne in first class and he said we 'should' not get charged any excess baggage weight for the MEL-SYD domestic flight home especially since our flight is the next morning.

Has this scenerio happened with anybody else and if so could you let me know how you got on if your baggage with overlimit for the domestic leg.
I'm worried that as the domestic leg is not a connecting flight that I may be charged overlimit fees.

any advice/info would be appreciated
Thanks

As you have two separate and independent tickets, you have two different baggage allowances. There is no way to link the more generous allowance from one flight to the other flight.

If it was possible to check the bags to SYD from HKG, then you could et away with it. But in your case it won't be possible since you have to collect the bags at MEL anyway to clear customs.

You can certainly ask to have any excess baggage fees waived, but do not have any expectations that this will be done.

Why didn't you include the domestic flight in the award rather than pay for the domestic sector separately? If it was on the same ticket, then the higher allowance would apply to the entire itinerary.

The allowance isn't far greater. The 1st allowance , as you mention, is 40Kg. The domestic economy allowance is 1 piece of no more than 32 Kg. If you are on separate itineraries you may be charged excess, however I wouldn't get too concerned since the charge for an extra piece is, iirc, $22 .

Thanks Dave
I was forgetting that the domestic is allowance is 32kg (thinking it was 22kg), so yes the difference is not that much greater.
Could you fill me in on what 'iirc' means ....thanks

Hi Dave

sorry, I don't quite understand. Are you saying that the charge of $22.00 is for an extra suitcase ?? Or, for the additional 8 kgs, being the difference between 32kg (econ) and 40kg (1st)

thanks Karen

The domestic allowance is one piece of max 32Kg whilst the international allowance is 40Kg spread over as many bags as you like

The charge per extra piece of max 32Kg is $22

I didn't realise that 1 extra bag for international flights that the extra charge would only be $22.00 for a max of 32kg.
I honestly thought that it was a per kilo charge for anything over 40kg whether it be in the 1 bag or not.

No - it's a flat $22 for an extra piece of 32kg on domestic flights.
International excess charges vary.
