Hello experienced flyers,

We need to fly return economy from Sydney to Tahiti for the 1st time to pick up a local cruise on 22nd Feb 2019. Flights seem to cost the same as I paid to fly to UK in economy recently ! ( $1,300 )

Any weird and wonderful routings to get there if we are going to have to pay that ! Don't mind a stopover especially if it works out cheaper LoL (I do like Value for Money - VFM ) .

We also have Qantas points to use if that's an option but not obligatory.

Thanks for your advice .

What flights/airlines are you looking at with the cost you mention?

We flew plain vanilla one way PPT-AKL-SYD on Air New Zealand and I'm sure it was nothing like that. I think there is also a route that goes via the Cook Islands.

Do you have any KrisFlyer miles?

If not, you can also use Qantas points to get to Tahiti. You'd fly from Sydney to Auckland with Qantas, then Auckland to Papeete on Air Tahiti Nui. If seats are available they should appear when you search for reward seats on the Qantas website.

Otherwise, what about booking a return flight to Rarotonga and adding on a return RAR-PPT flight? This will probably be around the same price but the RAR-PPT flight on Air Tahiti is only once per week.

I'm looking at googleflights - one way fares on both 19 and 20 Feb are in the region of AUD640-712. But they have lengthy layovers in AKL (16 hours). But you could get a hotel. I think you have to cross the dateline? So you arrive same day as leaving SYD.

Shorter layovers of just 3 hours in AKL will set you back AUD740.
