All, am going to take the wife somewhere special for her 40th. J Class and no more than 10 hours on a plane. Places she has loved previously include royal davui island in Fiji, Wolgan Valley outside of Sydney, and Huka Lodge in Taupo (she likes the 5+ stars) . Was thinking Bora Bora for a week, but the reviews of Air Tahiti J class suck.

Using the best of my WP status, we shall naturally try to start with a massage and bubbles in the Flounge, but where to? hints and tips are appreciated!

Flying QF out of Sydney.

Thanks all!

maybe QF to SIN or BKK and then connect to the Maldives?

Nice idea - Peninsula Hotel Hong Kong? Comes in just under the 10 hours flight time & lots of 5* luxury. We usually get a good deal via Amex for Peninsula Hotels. Another option for something tropical is the Havannah Resort in Vanuatu - 30ish minutes from the airport, max 32 guests, 4 hour flight time from SYD. For something nearby - Sapphire at Freycinet in Tas. Helicopter from the airport, VIP Sapphire Lounge at HBA, amazing food & service, incredible location - finish off in Hobart with a night at the Islington or MONA or A suite at the Henry Jones

Somewhere in Japan? Fits the travel limit and there's lots of luxurious places you can check out.

Maybe even find a bath house where you can soak away the cares.

Would code share on Fiji Airways count?

Vomo Island resort, Fiji. Fly into Suva, then a 15 min helicopter ride direct onto to their own island. But go outside school holidays if you want more peace. Hillside villa for yet more peace and quiet.

Check out trip advisor: Vomo Island Resort

Bliss!

Thanks all,
Want to take her somewhere new. So Fiji is out. Am thinking that Tokyo sounds good, as may Shanghai / Beijing. Bora Bora sounded really good but am not sure re the flight experience with ATN.

Any thoughts on 6 star in Malaysia or Vietnam?

Shanghai is not 'somewhere special'. It has (at the most) 1 day worth of sightseeing.

But China takes time to get used to. And Shanghai is all about the people you know and the great places to eat and drink when you are with friends. (By all means if you have friends there then go for it!)

Agreed. I have spent a couple of weeks there on business but it's a one/two day "WOW" affair. I was thinking maybe 2 days in Shanghai, then fly to Beijing for 5 nights? - do the great wall and maybe fly to Xian, but then again Bora Bora sounds nice :)

What dates are you looking at & how long have you got? You may need to factor in things that wet season/cyclone season etc at some destinations.

Are you burning any ff points eg on JASA's or buying commercial fares?

SIN,

Marina Bay sands will give her a good start to her 40's...

Any thoughts on 6 star in Vietnam?

The Nam Hai - Hoi An, Vietnam........get a pool villa

La Residence, Phou Vao, Luang Prabang, Laos.......beautiful!

The Datai, Langkawi Island, Malaysia..........very nice

The gentleman and I stayed at Fusion Maia in Danang in Jan 2012. Two free spa treatments per person per day which was great - if that is something your wife likes.

A little bit further is Salt Lake City so it is a full jump across the ditch and then stay at Little America in the tower or go the whole hog and try Grand America.
Never tell a billionaire that he cannot do something would probably explain those 2 hotels getting built.
Just booked Grand America this time and I am excited to be taking my wife there for the first time.

What about Queenstown. Ok only domestic style J class from Sydney but some nice resorts there, and if its not during the winter months won't be full of skiers. Also if the good wife is a foodie and into wine some good tours around that area. Also consider a chopper ride from Queenstown to Milford Sound - cost the earth but worth it! Wherever you choose I hope you have a great memorable getaway.

You cannot beat a safari. Fly QF Sydney to JNB, then onto Capetown. Stay 2 nights at the V&A Waterfront, 2 nights at Birkenhead House, Hermanus, 2 nights at La Residence, Franshoek. Fly back to JNB and have 3 x 3 days on Safari. There are many 6* camps to stay at. Kerr & Downey do a wonderful job at putting it all together.

We are going for our 3rd time this year with another booked next year. Have travelled on vacation all over the world and this is the absolute best. I know my kids all around 40 ish would give an arm and a leg to do one of our safari holidays.

Some lovely ideas here. A friend today said they had really enjoyed Samoa. I haven't been, so I don't know about luxury there.

Thanks for all the hints. Fiji, Thailand, Singers, Bali, NZ all out of frame (done them to death).

Am looking at locking into to Tokyo or the Nam. What's the J class up to Tokyo on the QF747?
Joburg is probably a bit far.

I flew up to NRT with QF in November. I thought it was pretty reasonable (although I do prefer the A380). Have dinner in the F Lounge, then maximize sleep on the way up. If you are interested in Tokyo, the Park Hyatt is fantastic. Some don't like the location in Shinjuku but it was fine for me.

I haven't been to Bora Bora but from all my friends who have been, it has been all above and beyond their high expectations.

I have Bora Bora as a must-go-to-destination for any special occasion.
