Is QF5/6 still running? I am trying to book SYD-FRA on that route but can't call up anything on the site that isn't [via the UAE] <redacted>. I thought QF5/6 was being extended until October?

QF is out of FRA on their own metal. Now stop and turn around in SIN from Sydney. Ended in April.

Shame! I was hoping to be on the last one. It's a dog airline what won't use jumbo jets all the way to London, anyway, QF5 was its saving grace.

To be annoyingly pedantic, the actual flight numbers QF5/6 still exist on the SYD-SIN-SYD sectors; they annoyingly truncated the SIN-FRA-SIN sectors 3 days before my recent trip to Europe.

As an aside, it is interesting how the fairly "mid-tier" flights to SIN and HNL (with superseded products) have retained single digit flight numbers (QF5 and QF3 respectively) as a result of QF truncating high profile routes at their intermediate stop but retaining the flight number. I would have thought that, for marketing purposes, routes like SYD-JFK and MEL-LAX would step in and take these numbers the way that BKK and SIN lost QF1 after their respective continuations to London got dropped.

HNL has always been QF3 as far as I can remember and if I'm not wrong the flight used to originate in MEL in the 1990s (MEL-SYD-HNL)?

Flight numbers always map to the destination, not the transit city.

Qf[-]2[/-] 1 and qf9 go all the way to London on the airbus "jumbo".

yep - easy to remember. Outbound flights are always odd numbers. I was told this saying years ago by a QF cabin crew member - "It's odd to leave Australia"

Funny I though QF1/2 were the only ones that meant something, hence why the were re-allocated to SYD-SIN-LHR when they dropped Bangkok and now SYD-DXB-LHR. Didn't think the rest had as much historical significance.

QF3 used to go through to the US west coast apparently (SFO or LAX), but the sector beyond HNL got truncated once the mainland US could be reached nonstop from Australia. A little before my time, but supposedly HNL used to act as a scissor-hub aggregating pax from Australian cities and sending them to various US cities (a la the former hub at SIN).

QF9 MEL-LHR also received similar treatment, with SIN losing the number when the flight got routed via DXB. There has been historically been a clear trend towards lower numbers going to A380/747 routes:
QF1/2 SYD-LHR-SYD
QF5/6 SYD-FRA-SIN
QF7/8 SYD-DFW-SYD
QF9/10 MEL-LHR-MEL
QF11/12 SYD-LAX-SYD
QF15/16 BNE-LAX-BNE
QF17/18 SYD-EZE-SYD (route ended)

If we conclude that there is a trend of QF assigning low digit numbers to "prestigious routes", IMO there are better candidates for the QF3/4 and QF5/6 numbers than the HNL 767 and the SIN A330. Maybe if BER gets up, it will pick up numbers 5/6.

Actually, it used to go to SFO via HNL (and in the days of the 747SP, direct to SFO without the HNL stop). Remember, when QF first started flying to the US west coast, it was to SFO, not LAX.

Thanks for that info! That may explain why the recent SYD-SFO-SYD flights were QF73/74 (given the previous QF3/4 numbering)?

For a short time:
QF15/16 MEL-FCO-MEL via BKK on a B743 and then PER-LHR-PER via SIN on a B744
QF17/18 PER-CDG-PER via SIN on a B744

Sure hope QF5 running on Monday... Mrs Paddy is supposed to be on it this coming Monday SYD-SIN :mrgreen:
