Hi all,

Looks like I'll be heading to gladstone for about 12 weeks from January next year for work. I'm a contractor at the moment, so no chance of accommodation being covered by an employer.

Just wondering what my best options would be for short term, cheap accommodation in gladstone? I'm happy to share a place, or even live in a hostel so long as I have my own room, shared bathroom isn't an issue.

Thanks,

JtK

There is no such thing as cheap accomodation in Gladstone, either renegotiate with the company or walk away would be my suggestion, renting will see prices from $300-600 a week and lengthy leases, share accommodation is very hard to find.

Thanks, not much chance of that I'm afraid. The rate on offer is already at the top end of what I do, so no chance of getting a accommodation covered unfortunately.

I guess I could rephrase the question to what would be the most cost effective option?

Most cost effective, camping. Other than that you could always commute from Gracemere/Rockhampton/Miriam Vale/Agnes Waters.

JtK, I don't think you'll have any problem finding accommodation at a reasonable price. 12 months ago people were living in caravans in the local show ground, but there have been many new hotels, apartment blocks and houses constructed and a large percentage of the LNG construction workers are now housed in camps on Curtis Island, so we now have an oversupply with many vacancies - to the point that landlords are 'giving away' free x weeks rent to entice tenants.

If you get really desperate, both my partner and I (we don't live together) have spare bedrooms. I'm sure something could be worked out.

I came here from inner city Newcastle, where I enjoyed a 'cafe society' lifestyle, a couple of years ago, to a town that (at that time) didn't even have Sunday trading at the major shopping centre. That same centre still doesn't have a cafe open past 19:00 on Thursday nights. It was a bit of a shock for me, but I came here because the money is better so I make the most of it by escaping most weekends. They do say the best thing about Gladstone is the airport!

You're only here for 3 months and will probably be busy working during that time, so if you arrive with low expectations you won't be disappointed. BTW, there are many 'locals' that love the place. :)

Thats for long term stays where a 6 or 12 month lease is required, while there are plenty of hotels they do book out and get as high as $495 a night, a no lease bed sitter apartment for shorter stays is $795 a week.

Your accommodation costs will be very high, if you find any, so that reduces the "rate on offer is already at the top end" to more normal rate. The rates are due the situation in Gladstone. Depending on where job is, hours & pick up point commuting from Rockie is practical, I have done it when no hotel accommodation was available on Gladstone.

12 weeks is short term for a lease. Try all the motels & real-estate agent. But you will be in a long que with many others. As post 2 above accommodation should have been part to deal

And I have spent too many weeks in Gldastone

I just spoke to Hookers and they said that they prefer 6 or 12 month leases but with the way the market is at the moment they are encouraging all applications regardless of duration and the outcome would depend on the individual landlord. Of course this situation my have changed by the new year.

Maybe realestate.com will have a share listing for Gladstone soon, been empty Everytime I checked!

I actually have a mate who has a brand new unit in Gladstone which is empty at moment so if you wanna shoot me a pm I will give you his mobile number and you can talk to him.

I looked at a couple of units up there in a new development early last year - thought they were too dear - seeing how the rental market has gone belly up am now glad I did not buy them.

Hey Johnny,
Alot of what Cat says in post 5 is accurate. A couple of Facebook pages exist that could also help. One is Gladstone Open Discussion. Moved from GLT in January, to BNE. Happy to circulate your need to my friends there if desired. Lots of availability of accommodation and agents willing to negotiate.

Tim

I use to do some wok in GLT every now and then and just did the commute from Rocky it is only an hour and a bit each way.

In Gladstone only or in general?

Only info I have is in Gladstone itself - couple of guys I know have had units there for 4 or 5 years - I think rentals down to about 50% of what they were at peak - ie $600/wk for 1 bdrm => $300/wk.

Thanks for the help everyone. I secured some shred accomodation about ten minutes out of town via the Gladstone open discussion Facebook group for a pretty reasonable price.

Got an operational upgrade for the Sydney to Brisbane leg of the trip so all good there.

Starting work in about 15 minutes.

Glad you got it sorted - Good luck with the new job.
BTW, thanks for the update
