Since moving to Melbourne 6 years ago, the wife and I have enjoyed travelling overseas with the multitude of airlines and cheap airfares available compared to Wellington.
Hoping to pick up some tips and tricks to make our flights more enjoyable/less stressful.
Happy travels!

Welcome aboard kiwires. I'm not sure if AFF will save you money, but I know it will lead you to a better class of travel!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Welcome Kiwires!
I agree that we often have some great deals flying international from MEL, particularly some cracking deals to SE Asia ($350 return to SIN on various LCC plus $600 return to HKG on QF can occasionally be had).
Award seats can be tough to snare , although if you plan 12 months out you can pick up a few J seats or even a F seat if your lucky depending on the loyalty program your enrolled in.
The thread here on AFF " cheap international airfares" is always worth a regular peek to gauge what hot deals are out there.

@Cool Cat - We've been fortunate to be able to use the QF Classic Awards to HKG twice in the last 5 years. Beats AirAsia to KUL, unless we score the Optiontown upgrade. Got another Award flight to HKG in March which I booked back in July '15.

Welcome to AFF the home of frugal flight

Kia Ora. Hope we see you along at a Melbourne social event, or even our WLG dinner in March ;)

Looking forward to it. Will be travelling most of March, but not to WLG unfortunately.

Kia Ora Cuz ;-)
Been a resi in Au for half a decade so far...

So, if you like a longhaul to Eu on Med or The Motherland... consider going Y to Japan and requesting Upgrade to J from Japan onwards...
It's a relatively unconsidered route from Japan onwards and mostly always LOTS of J available for upgrades.

Also...if you have a load of luggage,
but a limited ITEM Count
... then spend $10 or so and wrap two items together that still meet the weight requirements...

...and just like magic "They become ONE item"
They are inside the weight range when stuck with travel by item quantity instead of overall weight allowance.

Just sayin' ya know ;)

J da Way any Day ;-)

@donavan301 - Kia Ora!
We moved to Melbourne in 2009 so not long before you, bro.
So far, I've used my points to book Award flights which I understand can't be upgraded.
I've read where flights to HKG are available around $600 on Economy but upgrade requests are from Economy to Premium Economy are unlikely? Still following the forums and reading up on the Y's, J's, etc and seat availability.
Still, an 8-9 flight in Economy doesn't bug me too much. I'm small sized so the seats are just OK. Only wish I could fall asleep.
I usually fly with carry-on only and get check-in on the way back if I'm loaded with goodies for the whanau.
