General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

I wish people would refrain from bringing kids to the supermaket, it was near impssoble to keep distance from Mum, Dad and their 3 kids today - why couldnt one parent stay at home with the kids?

Agreed. I suspect it will take time for people to adjust to the new world order. Sadly, the virus may end up being the least of problems for many families :(

Yes it is a sexist remark. That does not make it incorrect. The PM seems to think that women be safer with someone. He did not say that men would be safer with someone. Neither is it saying that all women are angels and never do anything wrong. Let’s get real let’s remember the women who don’t make it home.

Not very PC of the PM.

Sexist remark. What about men who need someone to accompany them if they want to feel safe when they go out? ;)

There was clearly a wink after my comment. Just nodding to what sometimes is not obvious to everyone.

Has anyone changed their menus ?
We are going to have a few more vegetables based meals as obtaining meat isn't the easiest
More at home meals as we were a bit prone to meals out

Indeed.. many relationships function sustainably because the individuals can give each other plenty of room.
Now they are cooped up in small areas with their offspring and with little respite ; there may be trouble ahead , let's hope we can manage it.

Not as yet. We like to have two fish based meals and we can still get fish at the farmers markets. We tend to buy our meat at the Belconnen markets and they open Wednesday to Sunday and Mr FM goes shopping on a Wednesday morning so they have (so far) had plenty. They did tell him they had to shut at 10:30 on Sunday because they had nothing left!

you could order meals from all the restaurants that are doing take away/home delivery and have your meals out at home :)

Finally my tomatoes of course are all ripening at once. I’m eating a lot of tomato based pasta sauce and rata’. Am beginning to crave some meat.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Will be interesting to see how we end up against NZ's nuclear option where they still only average 1768 tests daily for the past week. Even with a small test base (12,376 total tests), their numbers have jumped from 66 to 512 in just a week representing a 3.6% positive testing rate, well above our 1.7% rate.
With family based there, the effective shutting down of all businesses along with social contact for at least a month will have a massive effect. My son-in-law solicitor was working from home the past week though since Wednesday's state of emergency shutdown, all of his clients are advising to cease any further action on their files.
Our figures are starting to trend down so it seems we will escape having to shut down any more businesses.

Is it only me that gets annoyed at the price of "saucers" for a pot plant? You can buy a huge 250mm pot for $3 but then they want to charge you the same for a dish in which to sit it :/

Found a 50 pack of plastic picnic plates today for $6. And they fit the pots! "Winning" :)
But then I discovered that I ran out of them before I had given each pot in my apocalypse-garden a comfy base. Made me do a count - have just over 70 pots - lettuces, tomatoes, coriander, snow peas, green beans, basil, sugar snaps, mint, rocket, rainbow chard, etc etc.

Thank you Corona for making me forget the endless pressures of daily life and actually enabling me to get back to soul-strengthening basics :)

People appear to OVERLOOK there are 5 Labor leaders and 3 LNP plus ScoMo on the National cabinet.
🤨 Whenever "National cabinet" has been mentioned, I've thought it was well... the cabinet. aka, government minsters.
Poking around, it appears to be the PM, state Premiers and mainland territory Chief Ministers.
In that case, how it is different from COAG?

We are lucky in Australia to have excellent specialists in many fields. I agree that too many in the medical profession have (vocally) not trusted the true experts. Continual criticism of policy exacerbates people ignoring official advice.

I agree.

I think that a minor, but significant thing, is that medical "experts" and practitioners are lumped into too small a group. I have no expectation that the local physio or GP has any more real knowledge than a person who seriously researches on the internet.

At the other end of the scale we have complete non-medicos such as the PM trying to express what they think is the best message - and sometimes this becomes ludicrous such as with his expressed enthusiasm just two weeks ago to go to the "footy" - ie indulge in truly mass social meetings. I am sure that he was technically correct in trying to avoid panic at that moment, but as in so many things, half the public were already in front of him in the reality curve.

I think we are finally taking the thing seriously - my experience going to a local supermarket reinforced this - with all their measures.

But "true experts"?? Who can claim to be this? We have people who are economic whizzes. We have medicos that know their subjects of contagious disease really well. And we have sociologists that have a far better idea than almost everyone about human behaviour. This whole thing requires all these areas of knowledge. We will stuff this one up, but the learning will be great for posterior diseases.
