Has anyone done the sums on best value betwwen taking the fuel discount as the regular 4c off or as QFF points. The 4c discount really is pretty pitiful when you see the difference made to the total. A flat % discount would be better but I guess they are there to take our money.

If you buy a lot of fuel, the savings over a year (and there’s a graph on the website) can be quite high. for my car, which is a petrol Celica, I managed to save about $50 a year, but as I don’t have a credit card, that $50 was worth more to me in points straight into my QFF account.

In the old super thread, when the switch was announced, the maths were done and I think it made sense if you had a bigger fuel discount (like 8¢ or more) as it still chops it in half.

Thanks for that. I did start looking in the super thread but there are way to many pages and I ended up giving up on looking. I know some members are very good with the numbers and I didn't want to do what had already been done. I have a 2L Subaru that I fill once a week at most and I have a discount on my card fortnightly so I am not using gigantic amounts of fuel in terms of discount value despite appearing to be paying out heaps on filling up.

I have two cards, one give the discount and the other the points. I mostly take the points but sometimes when there is a special of 7 or 8 cents special discount deal I take that. Like this week was an extra fuel discount or bonus points for buying $10 worth of seafood.

Why not have two? :D

It all depends on your driving. I have a 2L Subaru with a 64L tank at home. The weekly fill is always around 50L, so at 4c/l, that is a $2 saving. Some weeks you get the 7c/l or other offers, so say 50 weeks with $2 thats around $100/yr.

All depends if that is deemed a suitable saving or not. I am not going out of my way to get fuel so I find the discount ok.

In my view its all about how much your value your QFF points at. I value mine at 3c each so the calculation is easy:

4c / litre discount, 60l fill = $2.40

2p / litre, 60l @ 3c/point = 60 x 2 = 120 x 0.03 = $3.60

If you value your points at say 2c each then the result is neutral, 60l x 2p = 120p x 0.02 = $2.40 In this case I'd still take the points as I struggle to accumulate enough points yearly for all the things I want to do and having a float of at least 100K points helps a lot.

Financially, if you value your points at less than 2c ea you'd be better off taking the discount.

Incidently, the above guidelines also work if you are wondering, at the point of sale, if you should cop a CC surcharge. If the merchant wants more than 2-3% I can't go for it, as my points are only worth 3c each to me. My power bills cost me 0.65% so is easily "affordable" and worth the points gained (assuming I gain 1QFF per $ spent).

I value my points exactly the same however always buy 2 bottles of milk for $5 thus getting an extra 4c per litre discount. This extra discount does not earn the FF points so in my case I am better off taking the discount rather than the points, ie I am getting $4.80 value for 60 litres

I collect points on fuel, quite a lot actually :p This is how...
  • I use the Qantas Woolworths Everyday Rewards Credit Card - With the Pay Pass Facility.
  • I fill two vehicles with the one fuel voucher, cars side by side at the same pump.
  • The usual weekly fill for both cars is approx 120L to 130L (combined)
  • I am lucky and get heaps of bonus offers, so usually I have a 8cent / 12cent / 15 cent voucher.
  • Points earn off the fuel voucher is between 500 QFF/ 750 QFF / 938 QFF
  • Points earn from the Credit Card purchase is approx 160 QFF
  • I only get fuel at the bottom of the price cycle, usually < $1.30/L
To get value out of QFF from fuel, it is really important to take as much fuel as possible when using the high discount vouchers, in my opinion, the closer you get to the 150L limit the better...!

I must also note that the above method is breaking their terms and conditions since you are technically only allowed to use one voucher per car, but since I pay at the pump using pay pass, nobody really knows... ;)

With the above method I earn approx 900 QFF per week or around 46,000 points per annum :D

Finally, on the odd occasion where I have a 20cent voucher, I have been known to take the jerrycan in as well to get up to the 150L limit. on these occasions the expected QFF earn, including credit card points is somewhere around ~1,700 QFF :!:

And that my fellow AFF friends is how to squeeze every last point out of the fuel bonus program...

Sheesh you guys take this stuff seriously... :) I am still a little in the dark as to whether you can earn any points at the pump other than just paying for it with a credit card that earns points (WWEDR MC or my AMEX at 1.5pts/$1)...

As i shop for one i often struggle to get up over $30 to even earn the 4c discount per week (often a few small shops) and don't think i have ever managed to get an 8c or 12c by taking advantage of any of the special offers (I should probably try harder but was also wondering about taking as poitns or as fuel discount)...

So i take it the basic 4c discount and fill up, if i put $70 of fuel in the car each week which, i don't know, might eqaute to 50 Lts do i hand over my EDR card and get anything points for this or QFF bonus points or is it just credit card points??? As i am moving much closer to work hopefully the $70/week will come down to less than that per Ft...

Thanks...

You betcha :)

I struggle to get enough points, so I look for every opportunity. I've even bought a cheeseburger using Amex. Note that I don't spend only to get points, that would be silly, like not earning money so you don't have to pay tax, the but when money needs to change hands anyway I'm always looking for the best points earn I can get.

I first hand over my EDR card to get the fuel voucher recognised (and make some points), then hand over my Amex to pay and gain the CC points.

shintaro10x I certainly agree.
In the last 12 mths I have accumulated 29K points on this alone plus the Amex purchase in store.
My fuel is tax deductable so I'm very happy to take the points up front. When ever a bonus comes alone I will purchase up to 4 types of fuel to get to 150 litres. A few months ago I scored the max on a 25c voucher - 1875 points or I could have increased my tax income by $37.50.

In terms of value, it is fixed 2 cents per point. I usually take my jerrys down if I have a big voucher and get the points on 100+ litres otherwise I use the kids card and get the discount. But really it makes no difference. NB I currently have 6 vouchers available.

Ok, sorry just coz i can be a bit slow

I go to Caltex and buy $50 worth of fuel, i hand them the everyday reward card which may have a 4c/Lt discount and reduce the amount by a couple of bucks to $48... I pay for it with my Amex 1.5pt/$ and get 72 points from the bank... Does the actual $48 spend at caltex get me any QFF points like at woolies eg anything spend at woolies over $30 gets you one point per $...

(or do you need to have a fuel offer in your email to get the points, i don't seem to recall getting voucher offers for fuel, just stuff in woolies or BWS etc...)

And yes i look for every opportunity to put purchases through credit card these days, Subway meals are through my Visa, macca's meals are through my Amex, buying drinks at a bar is now put on the card rather than cash... nothing is bought with cash unless they don't card cards for some reason or i am just in a hurry...

Have a look here... https://www.everydayrewards.com.au/edr/wps/portal/rewards/root/aboutcard/fuelreward/!ut/p/b1/04_SjzS0MDKyNDQ0MzXVj9CPykssy0xPLMnMz0vMAfGjzOLdDc2dTFxMTQwsfH3dDDwNXfx9PP29jQ28jPSDU_P0c6McFQHHLzZe/

Keep in mind that if you choose to turn your Everyday Rewards into FF points, that you need to spend a minimum of $30 to redeem any points.

Although if you keep the fuel discounts, it is my understanding that all of the smaller purchases below $30 accumulate towards the fuel discount.

Scott welcome to AFF.
You need a min. spend of $30 at their supermarket or bottle shop to get a 4c discount / 2 points per litre voucher on your docket or rewards card. If you have a rewards card for every $ above $30 you get 1 point (providing you are a QFF member) regardless of the type of fuel voucher.

it's always about the points. fuel is tax deductable and we get extra points via the credit card to buy the grocers( or grog) and then again when we pay for the fuel:D

I drive a Orix fleet car, could i scan my EDR card at the pump to receive 2 points /Liter when paying with the fuel card? Would be handy as i burn roughly 75L p/w

What sort of fuel card...? Brand or name...?

Or are you talking about a standard business credit card...?

Its an Orix fuel card linked to the car so i type in a pin and odometer reading after swiping.

Also the card is only accepted at Caltex.

Ill try it next time i fill up and report back.
