Hi, Can anyone confirm or deny that QF frequent flyer points are available on gift cards? For example, a $500 gift card, earns 5,000 points to the purchaser? Then points are awarded when the recipient actually travels? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.:)

Not at the moment. For the last 2 years there have been limited promotions around December where the gift vouchers have earned 10 points per dollar. However, the promo is not current. You do, of course, earn points for flights purchased with gift vouchers at any time of the year.

Outside the promo the real advantage of gift vouchers with qantas is you don't pay a credit card surcharge even is purchasing by card. I buy all of my qantas flights with gift vouchers.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

They do offer points for gift card purchases at special times as a promotion but not normally, the last two Decembers have seen such a promo.

I didn't even know there was such a thing. Where do you buy them?

Under the book tab on the website, there should be a gift voucher section.

On a side note if you ever have to cancel or modify a flight purchased with gift vouchers, prepare to jump through hoops with the reservation team to make sure you get the gift voucher's value showing as doing this online won't recognise the gift voucher's value. (Similar to points and points redemptions)

I've had absolutely no problem modifying a gift voucher based booking. Did 2 days ago. Simply a matter of going into the booking and changing it.

If and when offered in December.

Vouchers are available at all times. Promotion points are not.

Ok maybe it's just me, cause I don't get my voucher credit recognised...

I've never cancelled such a booking. But when changing a booking it just seems to recognise the cost of the purchased flights and add on the fare difference. Perhaps the difference might be that I buy $50 vouchers that always require a top up when booking. :?:

I may or may not need to change a booking next month and I'm looking into it and the flight was $189 paid with a $50 voucher, only $139 comes up as credit and asks me to pay $120 ($40 change fee) cause the new fare is $219. I'm on a red-E deal if that makes any difference.

This is what mine does via manage you booking then click on change button. Flight selection shows this at the bottom:

Then I select a flight to get:

Then in the review page:

So basically it always goes back to the full fare if the booked flight. In my case $129 being $50 voucher and $79 card payment. Is yours a one way or return? If return has the first leg been flown? Just wondering if the price of the first flight is affecting it or something.

Btw I'm pretty sure the change fee is $65 for red-e-deals. Still doesn't make your number work.

I should double check the change fee. Probably is $65 and I mixed my fees with something else. I wasn't actually looking at the change screens when i wrote that, I was going off what I remembered and I definitely know the values didn't add up and I was constantly $50 short everytime I tried. And yes my fare is a one way red-E deal.
I'll run through it again to see what it's doing now.

Thanks for all your great info....its put my mind at rest....cant wait for Christmas! (Go the Tigers!)

Assuming you can see your booking in the first place! ;)
