I have a colleague looking to take 11 people on an itinerary of:

MEL - LAX - JFK - HNL - MEL with a possible side trip up to Canada.

Would this qualify for a RTW ticket?

Interested in the collective wisdom.

No, RTW requires you to go around the world in the same direction.

In your colleague's case, that would mean coming home from JFK via UK/Europe/Asia/Africa.

They could do the HNL stop on the way to LAX.

It might qualify for a circle pacific fare.

Some airlines do offer a RTW product that doesn't require going around the world. Swiss springs to mind but obviously they product is about Europe. Not sure if an US airline has similar.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I guess the real question is whether there's a smarter way to book this other than straight point to point fares.

There is no real need to be chasing points/ lounge access etc so it's a bot of an open book.
