Random thoughts (mini TR) from yesterday's SYD-AUH on VA
air New Zealand lounge pretty basic but fair wine selection. Nice (if a bit bogan) touch of having a DIY hot dog stand in the lounge. Good fast WiFi but no real snacks to carry on board
Priority boarding a breeze. Looks like I got a platinum shadow. No personal welcome from CSM - but hey ho. Passengers appeared to be much more towards the holiday maker demographic on the whole. Nice newish 777 but with old fit out
Once we got going I tried to order a glass of Chardonnay and was told to "just wait". A bit of a short put down. When drinks service commenced choice was only UNWOODED Chardonnay. Are they kidding. Ordered red instead
Meal service was OK and the food in Y is certainly better than QF. butter chicken for first meal and chicken pie with mash and mushy peas for the second.. Not bad. Snack pack in between.. Mostly cough but I did like the nuts with dried cranberries
4 hours into the 14 hour flight and they ran out of red wine. Apparently nobody likes the UNWOODED Chardonnay and they still had almost the entire 37 bottles left. Spoke to CSM about this. apparently they tried Viogner once and then a Sauv Blanc but nobody liked them.. Obviously somebody needs to get a clue. No offer to get wine from PE or J. So onto the G and Ts. Very poor
Service very slow and unresponsive on board and the IFE is awful.. Good job I had a fully loaded iPad. Good USB charging in every seat. Cabin temperature a bit too hot apart from the last 2 hours
Bottled water distributed to all but no refills and directed to the galley tap (once again rather brusquely)
Summary. Take your own entertainment, don't expect any frills as a WP down the back and assume you will be drinking mixed drinks for most of the journeyBags came off first (good) and I hopped straight into a pre paid taxi to run into Dubai (295 Dh) rather than wait for the limo bus
