hi

I've been trying to find the quickest way to Havana from Sydney - ie fewest connections & layover times. Due to our American friends continuing their embargo it takes a long time. It seem the fastest way is LAX - Mexico (either Mexico City or Cancun) then over to Havana from one of those. Or maybe LAX to Bermuda.

Has anyone done this trip?

thanks

Air Canada SYD-YVR-YYZ-HAV is civilised and doesn't require a change of carrier.

Via Canada is the normal route. I have done this a couple of times from Japan. LAN is another idea via EZE but I prefer the Canadian option, eventhough their customs staff are usually 2nd-graders on steroi_s, in-bred, and looking to hassle non MapleLeafs...

Surely they only give grief to the neighbours of the south (and northwest)

It does require an overnight in YYZ though.
If travel is at a time of the year where AC are offering one of their western ports to a Cuban destination, (seasonal from the West) it has sometimes in the past connected from the SYD flight over YVR and another city like YYC. Depends on this years schedules I guess - as AC serves 5 Cuban destinations there is some researching that needs to be done if trying to get a same day connection from any of their Canadian ports.
AC also serves VRA as much as or more than it does HAV and it's a good alternate to HAV itself. They're a bit like OOL and BNE - VRA is where all the beachy touristy resorts and high rises are, connected to HAV by reasonably frequent bus transfers of about 90 mins duration.

Coming back, most everything from Cuba connects to the YYZ-SYD AC flight.

Despite all that, most people still seem to want to do the connection via U.S. & Mexico as it's usually cheaper, despite all the hassles that routing entails.

Re: Quickest way t0 Havana from Sydney

I'm doing the trip myself next year and the route you have mentioned seems to be the quickest. Your right about the Yanks and making you jump through hoops to travel through their country.
