Hey we all do it but sounds like the passenger ate something particularly nasty the night before.
Wonder how long the flight was?

Oh and the article does mention that it is better to let them go.

Finally, perhaps perhaps our resident medial personnel could comment? Does having noxious farts indicate their may be an cough illness?

As far as airplane sins go, in-flight farting is the unspoken evil.

But one desperate passenger was forced to take action when they found themselves placed in the firing line of a particularly flatulent flyer.

The passenger scribbled the plea for help on a napkin, and passed it onto a flight attendant.
"I don't know if you can make an announcement," the note reads. "But if you can, you should say that whoever is farting in the area of rows 10 to 12 should definitely see a doctor..."

And clearly not written by a Doctor whom I would hope not use the word "cough" but rather by someone who just wants to raise a stink. :D Sorry, couldn't help myself.

The best avoidance of that little problem is to not eat for hours before the flight or during the flight at all. That leaves more food for the rest of us. ;)

Sure it's rude but it's just natural. Once it starts it can be difficult to stop. Will a plug help?

A real concern being the new generation of aircraft. Was on the A350 last week and one has to be very careful about the sly popping off, this next generation of aircraft will expose a multitude more sins that older ones!

Not much you can do.. Personally I find BO more of an issue than people farting.

Must have been a man. Girls would have kept it in. Does the relative lower pressure in the cabin relative to sea level mean that a relatively greater volume gets emitted/dumped?

Yes they are called the gas laws!! People started to realise by the end of the 18th century that there is a relationship between temperature pressure and volume.

One such important law is Boyles Law: it says that the volume of a given mass of a gas is inversely related to the pressure exerted on it at a given temperature and given number of moles.

No .....moles are is not spy vernacular!

At 8000 feet cabin altitude air pressure is 565 mmHg Mercury
At sea level it's 760 mmHg

Expansion of Air in the tummy volume can increase close to 30%.

Expansion of said air rarely causes problems as there is so little of it. But at times ileostomy or colostomy patients will need to change bags more frequently then when on the ground.

A person with a peptic ulcer will know it. ( especially if perforated) sometimes the air expansion will compromise the blood flow in the gut.

It's what you eat I think. The eggs Benedict in lounge may be unhelpful. Maybe turbulence causes flatulence with some men (and women)

Flatulance and belching is how we vent extra gas !

though the relative elasticity ofvtheccolon should be able to accomodate some of this increase in volume without resulting in a rise on pressure.

Additionally the sense of smell is inhibited at altitude and there is an adjustable airjet in the console above which causes increased dissipation of the offending dump.

To be able to detect it would necessarily mean its a particularly pungent batch

do certain airlines suffer from the problem of offensive smell?

The air jet is just another vent to counteract another vent ( smelly air jet )

Vent to vent = equilibrium restoration

Not all offensive smells are caused by belch and fart. Durian has foul smell and number of airlines, principally in Indon/Malaysia, disallow it to be brought onboard.

Love the durian smell. Its not even offensive. Have even been to the AYCE roadside stores in KL.

Was actually thinking of the BO kind of smell

What is Durian ?
