Pay Points to Extend Qantas Status

Is there a offer to retain Gold as well? Or just Platinum only so far?
There is for those who are falling short of retaining Gold. It's 80,000 points to retain SG.

Like the offer to retain Platinum you can't count on getting it and it may be a lot worse value than doing a status run to make up the shortfall.

Also the 80,000 points don't get you any SC whereas doing flying to makeup the shortfall gets you SC that'll be added to your LTSC tally to progress towards LTG.

Also, the 8900 Points earned would have been a nice bonus (I note the SYD/AKL Business class 'sale' fares are no longer valid for September travel).

Throwing my opinion in the ring here:

How do you value your time?

~$1500k status runs for x amount of time spent on a plane
or ~$2000k worth of points (at a kind valuation) for no time spent

Whilst 80K points is not small amount of points, it is only a credit card sign up bonus so if they offer me this option I may end up using it.

I have a little bit of a different story. I was got to Platinum in three months 2 years ago. Travel dried up and the following year I hardly travelled the following year, I was lifetime silver and expected to be dropped to Silver. They gave me gold. Travelled a bit more last year but not enough to get any status and fell short of lifetime Gold by 108 points. Qantas let me keep gold. Thank you very much. I'll be lifetime Gold shortly. I won't be paying for Platinum but I think I might be travelling a bit more now anyway.

If status credits are worth $ then we should be able to trade 'unused' ones. If you've passed one level (say retained Gold) but not received enough to get to Platinum then what is the value of the excess?

They still count towards lifteime status which has value until one hits LTG.

As for "trading" SC's? Hmm.. interesting idea. A bit like gifting status.. but really no not really in my view. SC's are to reflect one's own travel and, in theory, loyalty. I do not think you will ever see the day SC's are "tradeable"

Agree in theory although clearly Qantas see them as having value, and as you say once you hit LTG their value actually drops. Just throwing the idea out there :).

I think you'd be more likely to ge "rollover SC" as an option but even then I can't really see that happening.... after all if one makes 1300 SC in a year, and they could rollover the SC's post attaining Gold, which would be 600, that would mean the next year they'd have instantly reneed Gold. Not exactly in QF's interest when the whole point is to induce more spend/travel.

For sure; this is part of the conundrum with many loyalty programs. The provider introduces them to promote spend but they must set some rules, which like all rules establishes boundaries which can (and often do) result in frustration and negative sentiment with at least with some customers. Ironically it's the customers who are being targeted who are most likely to feel that way.

I imagine that was the original premise that 'comping' status used to happen after three years or so dependant upon actual status credits earned

Exactly. A few hundred bucks (at worst) worth of credit card annual fee to get the signon bonus(es), seems a pretty cheap and easy way to maintain status.

So turns out I logged into my account the other day and get a "Congratulations you've retained Platinum" banner. I ended the year with 900 SC but they've given it to me anyway. No contact with Qantas since the 120000 points offer. Thank god I didn't accept it! Can only assume it's because I've been 10 years Platinum. Anyway, happy days :)

Is there any info yet as to when the points offer is made? Eg Number of credits left to retain; number of years at that status etc etc? It’s probably too early though.

I hope for your sake that this sticks.

There are a few anecdotes around where at the 'turn of the month' it appears status is retained but 4 or 5 days into the new month it drops. Have you received a new card as yet?

Not yet. My SC were reset today. Still showing Platinum in my profile. The banner message 2 or 3 days ago was what had me wondering though - why congratulate me then take it away?
