Expansion of OW and Star Alliance networks

Came across this about Air Tahiti Nui but not sure if that will materialise:

Past few years have reported Virgin Atlantic to be joining an alliance but there was no announcement.

Based on their fleet size, where they fly and who they already have codeshare agreements with, why would they need anything else? If their systems will need upgrading for example, that sounds like it'll be far too costly for their relative size.

It doesn't appear you can even get there (direct) from Australia!

Fiji Airways would seem like a better fit!

Just caught up with this but apparently Tahitian Ministers of Tourism have been saying this for at least 3 years-

Star doesnt need anymore members- its already far too big!

Not so. Now only 1 member in US, none in AU, GB, RU & FR, so there are still major large geographic and population areas with limited coverage. There are probably too many in Europe, but they are mainly LH subsidiaries, & still only 1 per country. Asia is well covered, but still only 1 per country apart from China.

Agree with jgm. *A could do with an Australian member. Also, a bit lacking in Russia and only one member in the US now that US has left.

Would certainly be happy with Korean, but doubt CX would like it, although they allowed MH and UL
