Hello - first post but long time lurker - please be gentle with me!

I've been fortunate over the last 12 months to have 3 upgrades from Economy to Business class in the following scenarios:

Free upgrade at gate AUH to HKT (complete surprise when my ticket wouldn't swipe "Madam you have been complimentary upgraded". Thank you! I'd just made silver guest at this point???

Spoilt by my surprise upgrade a few months earlier and wanting to try the upstairs of 380 I had successful bid upgrade MEL to AUH $'s and the same on the way back AUH to MEL £'s

My question is - there are different degrees of classes v's bids - will whether I booked saver, classic or flex be reflected in the sliding scale on the upgrade? Do the minimum - maximum bids change?

Another trip looming to MAN and I have enough points to upgrade for the AUH to MEL in classic economy just wondering if I need to book classic on the way there or I can get away with saver if it's the same sliding scale if I tried to bid for the MEL AUH again?

May sound very stingy but these trips back to Manchester are getting more and more common as my parents over there age with various health issues so it's not just the cost of flights it's all the annual leave days from work and hoping to be able to afford an actual 'holiday' with my family over here in Melbourne. We always knew this would become an issue when we emigrated 13 years ago so not complaining as it's our choice.

Thank you I appreciate your knowledge AFF gurus.

I would assume so, am not sure however. I wonder if the only way to find out would be to actually ask someone booked on the same flight yet in a different booking class. I am aware though that it costs twice as many points to upgrade from Saver then from Flex.

i think if someone paid a saver seat and another a flex then EY already has that money.

when looking at cash upgrades I reckon they will take whoever offers the most $ regardless of original booking class. I mean if a Flexi person offers $500 and a saver person $1000 if I were a business I would take the $1000! As stated previous, the saver and Flexi tickets are guaranteed already. Just my 2 cents.

For points upgrades I would expect a difference between upgrading from saver vs Flexi but I've not looked this up to confirm.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The calculator on the Etihad Guest website does not distinguish between fare classes for points upgrades.

As I've been able to upgrade a very low price fare to Business for the minimum amount with the auction system, I don't see any evidence that discriminates either. But if there was competition for the seat, maybe that would be different?
