Hi Everyone

I am curious to know if any AFF'ers had experieced the Wolgan Valley resort here in NSW? I am off there this weekend and I am interested to hear of anyones experiences. We got the "Winter Escape" deal which is $1365 ea for two nights - $600 saving ea. Not bad considering the rack rate of $1900.

Tripadvisor has a few reviews, the absolute majority of them applaud the place. The last nice resort I went to was Qualia on Hamilton Island, so will be good to compare the two.

Hayden I know you're a Centurion cardmember - did you book that through Centurion Travel? The brochure that arrived in the post today also offers a nine-course degustation dinner on one night plus early/late check in/out in addition to the standard package inclusions listed on the property's web site. If there indeed some differences with the inclusions you might want to try to switch to the Centurion package.

I'd love a trip review also. My neighbours went last year and loved it.

No way! We booked direct with the resort - funny, because my partner suggested that we give Centurion a buzz and see "what they could do"... my response was "nah - its already a special deal, so I doubt they could do anything better". So, as you mentioned, it probably would've been an idea to speak with them

I wonder if I could call the hotel and ask them if i'm still eligible?

Was it the same price as what we paid, or was the price the full tariff?

The same price as you paid. Also the same package name. But when you compare the list of benefits from the hotel site with the Centurion promo the 9-course dinner and the early/late in/out are on the Centurion promo but not listed on the hotel web site. So it's not a huge difference, on the surface.

A 9-course dinner at a hotel charging that much would surely be around $300 per head.

I hope you enjoy your stay.

The fine team over at Amex were able to take over the booking and we are now able to enjoy a degustation & a late checkout. Cheers Homer for alerting me to the deal - otherwise we would've been in the dark.

Trip report to come.

My pleasure Hayden, and the only favour I request in return is a detailed trip report. :)

It went very well - the place was fantastic.

Overall I am impressed with the Wolgan Valley experience given the price paid ($1360 a night). If however I was paying the full $1900 tariff I might be expecting something just a little more discerning (but i'm talking about that last 1% of pure luxury and service that is very difficult to attain). My previous experience at a luxury resort was Qualia on Hamilton Island, and Qualia really was the benchmark. I would rank the Emirates property as just below Qualia if I were to compare the two, but both offer quite different experiences with Emirates providing many more activities such as horse riding etc etc. As my partner and I usually spend most of our holidays in PJ's drinking/eating/relaxing in bed watching movies, the activities part really did not spark our interest.

All staff were as expected very welcoming and exceptionally polite as one would expect. The managers who were both floating around throughout the weekend were mature and insanely personable, but the remainder of staff appeared to be young and as a result, did not carry the same level of experience and distinction that I have seen at other facilities.

The property itself is expansive and has fantastic views of the mountain range/gully. The Heritage suite is sensational and really does meet all expectations. I won't really go into detail as the pictures speak for themselves, but the fit out was very nice and the four posted bed was AMAZING (NB if you book, make sure that you get a room that is a king bed, and not a zipper king! We initially got given a room that had two single beds pushed together, but this was not acceptable so we were given a new room).

The food was generally very good. The inclusive meals were all of high quality, however on the first night we were given the degustation which was of average quality - not the best degustation I have had. The breakfast and dinner are held in the main restaurant, with lunch & snacks being able to be ordered from the casual "Country Kitchen". I found the meals from the Country Kitchen to be of the best quality - I had the best meals at the resort at that restaurant!

The inclusive wines that were on offer were from the Regional NSW area (Orange etc)... I found the reds to be OK at best with the whites being slightly better. Still - the wine was complimentary so I shouldn't whinge. The wine list was extensive and we bought a couple off the list. The 2000 Dom is about $700 so expect to see a decent markup on normal bottleshop prices (obviously).

Top marks to the team at Wolgan Valley, with the missing points being down to staff experience and a average degustation. I would recommend the resort to anyone wanting a relaxing weekend away from Sydney as it ticks all the boxes for such a trip - and when using the "winter weekend warmer" special, the place is of great quality. Give it a go - you won't be disappointed.

Nice pics, as usual, Hayden - and thanks for the quick report. I guess it wasn't your night to make dinner (or reservations) so you had time for AFF when you got home :). Was the individual plunge pool heated? Previously I had only seen the official images which make it appear to be outdoors but from your shots it looks to be enclosed (though it seems like the doors can be opened) so hopefully it is also heated which would make it usable year-round. Also would you mind elaborating on the atmosphere? It seems a bit, well, lonely out there...were there other guests around? Did it feel really, really quiet?

The plunge pool was heated, though the pumps work from 7am - 10pm (therefore late night skinny dips may get chilly in winter). The windows can all be opened if you wish. The pool area is quite open and can be seen by passer byers - however given the limited number of patrons at the resort, this would more than likely be infrequent.

The atmosphere was welcoming - the guests were generally couples (I noticed that a number of them were gay, which was good because we didn't feel like the "only gays in the village"). There wasn't a huge amount of interaction between guests, but we didn't really put ourselves out there and attempt to strike conversations with the randoms. The clientele wasn't as "high brow" as I thought it would be though, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I didn't really feel alone/isolated (perhaps except for that pannicky feeling we got when we realised that we had run out of cigarettes - the nearest 7/11 is a long way away - thank god guest services had some stock available)

The late check out was fantastic by the way - really gives you previous extra relaxation hours and the opportunity to have one last lunch before heading home. We checked out at 3:30pm.

Thanks Hayden great comprehensive TR. Good photos. Might have to persuade Shrek to stump up the cash for a birthday weekend sans enfants!

Now Mrsdrron certainly likes to camp out under at least 5 stars but I must say the price even on special would put us off.Paid less to stay at the Cavielri Rome with an Imperial floor room overlooking the Vatican plus the Degustation menu in their 3 hat restaurant which was one of the best meals we have ever had.
Great pics.
