On the DXB-SYD-AKL run, I believe that the crew overnight after each sector (i.e. they don't do SYD-AKL-SYD on the same day).

My understanding is that this isn't the case for the Boeing 777 crew doing DXB-BKK-SYD-CHC-SYD-BKK-DXB. Apparently they do a same-day return to Christchurch from Sydney.

Correct, all the EK A380 DXB to MEL/SYD/BNE and then on to AKL return have crew have a 24 hour rest at each port after single legs.

I would be concerned if crew did the whole way from DXB to NZ - it would have them operating for around 24 hours including pre-departure. Not acceptable for safety.

Not quite what I meant. They overnight in BKK and SYD in each direction, but do SYD-CHC-SYD on the same day. I think they may also do 2 nights in SYD instead of one on the return, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

I was referring to the OP and subsequent discussion - the idea that crew would fly DXB-SYD-AKL would be a concern.

The crew definitely join locally for the BNE/AKL sector, I would think they would do the same day return sector also AKL/BNE as that would still be well within their duty limitations.

It would fit within duty hours, but they don't do it. They have a 24 slip in BNE/SYD/MEL, operate the next day to AKL, have a 24 hour slip there, operate back to BNE/SYD/MEL, have another 24 slip there, and then back to DXB.

Have seen EK crew at Radisson Blu at O'Connell St multiple times, so I would think so?

Come to think of it I've seen them at the BNE EK checkin counters in the am so they must be checking in their luggage which they wouldn't need to do if they were doing a same day return as they'd be HLO.

That makes sense, but I'm pretty sure I've seen the EK crew coming off a same-day turnaround to CHC waiting for luggage at the carousel in SYD. Would they perhaps take their things with them in case they got stuck at the destination overnight (e.g. due to an aircraft going out of service)?

+1 here. A good friend of mine is Cabin Crew with EK and they spend the night in AKL. It's actually one of his favourite trips as they land in AKL in the early afternoon and don't have to report back to the airport the next day for 24 hours. Hint: it's a great trip to hit the town in AKL as there's no early wake up call....

His theory as to why EK make them do this rather than coming right back to SYD is that the hotel rates in AKL (and the NZ$) are significantly cheaper, and with dozens of crew there every day it adds up.

That theory makes zero sense, having them stay in NZ one night, as well as AU two nights - is not cheaper than having them stay in AU two nights and do a return flight on the Tasman in the same day in the middle.

Having them stay overnight in Auckland will never avoid the need to overnight them in SYD/BNE/MEL two nights as part of the DXB-AUS-AKL-AUS-DXB flight route of the A380's that EK run.

Has to do with total work hours on the trip (due to the long sectors from DXB), they would still have the same amount of hotel nights, just rather than 2 nights in SYD and one night in AKL it would be 3 nights in SYD.

I would imagine that with the 3 x A380 crews hitting the hotel each day that it could very well be a rotating shift party.

EK Crew stay at the Pullman in Auckland.
