Ouch, that's 10 percent of the backlog, wonder if it will be a catalyst for others.

markis10, what in your opinion is the reason behind this cancellation? A380neo or more 777X?

Neither, I think they may go 787-9 with an order soon, it was announced today first delivery is being moved forward to week after next.

Maybe they didn't like the data coming out of the test flights of the A350? Possibly a 787 order at Farnborough?

Will be very interesting to see who (if anyone) snaps up the suddenly spare airframes. If VA ever wants to expand international wide body operations they could be a candidate...

They would be very unlikely to be interested even if they are keen to expand, they have access to EYs pool of orders and I think you will find thats where a lot of the aircraft come from for future expansion, bit like a group ebay deal.

True... I guess it depends on how generous EY's terms are for their partners, and whether or not airbus is desperate to make a show of there being demand for the A350. There might be some good pricing going around if they want to counter today's bad news quickly!

I agree and I think VA would be wanting about 4 or 5, not 70!

Do EY have some older widebodies that theyre looking to get rid of? Surely VA would be seriously considering taking them on to launch Asian routes? I know they attempted MEL-HKT with a 777 but that was like using a sledgehammer to break open a walnut.

Surely some older A330s or 777-200s would be suitable? Fit them with the 'new A330' fit out and commence?

It won't be Q that they are still happy with the clunkers they have left.

They need to think of something to replace the 747s on routes that are too far for A330s and dont warrant demand for an A380 (JNB, SCL etc)

EY at this stage cannot get enough aircraft to operate their own fleet which is why they lease from VA and jet, the only retirements they have coming up that make sense are the A340, I can guess where they are going, and its not to an airline. They do have a lot of dreamliners on order, 71 with 37 options, I am sure some of them might call Australia home eventually.

My guess is VA's iffy experience with their most recent second hand A330s might lead them to go new, if/when they expand. Concur that they'll surely only be looking at a small number from whatever source...
